Show ILLS US EVOKES IREFUL we copy the following from the progress of fillmore issue of oct 6 1933 by 0 D mcneely DELTA the minds of the people of delta are now being taxed with the para mount issue in the coming election on the question of the repeal of the amendment and before the ah of november the lines will be tightly drawn the say that the town will go wet by two to one while bile the drys claim they will win out with a substantial majority the contention of the wets la Is not that they are theoretically wet but that prohibition has not only become obsolete but has proved itself to be a disastrous failure in every sense of the word and that it has not accorn any of the purposes of bet berment tor for which it was promulgate ed it is not proven a remedy tor for the drink evil instead it has pro drinking lawlessness crime and accidents and especially has it encouraged drinking among the boys and girls in their teens along with a general disrespect des respect for all law they claim that the state of utah is SO 80 per cent wet or against the ex asting prohibition law and that it if each voter votes his own conviction the them state will go tor for repeal by 4 to 1 they also point out that it would be a calamity for the state to vote against repeal as that would show to the rest of the country that we are a state teeming with hypocrites since it is no secret to the rest of the coun try that utah is one of the very wet states and that our big cities are over crowded with bootleggers hi ill backers gangsters and racketeers and that our towns hamlets and vil lagos lages are beset with comely bootleg gers who supply the gentility the riff riffraff raff and the sturdy youth with the poisonous beverage which coach the young americans in the gentle art of drinking in the dark and par tying in the wild seclusions of the sheep camps and isolated sout of the te way places they say that we will lose the esteemed respect of the oth er tates we have acquired should we ote against repeal in the face of existing circumstances which we can in no wise cover up the wets agree that it if we were a non drinking population it would indeed be meritorious tor for us to go forward and vote dry and show that we intended to stay dry however since we have not shown ourselves to be dry in fact it would be the height of hyp for us to undertake to preach to the world that we are and that by vot ing dry or against repeal we would virtually to the world that we pr preach each one thing and practice an other therefore they say we should show ourselves to be regular people and vote our honest convict ions and line up with the other great states which have decided in no un mistakable terms to rid themselves of the greatest curse that has at af flirted any people since god sent the ten plagues on the pharaohs of egypt now the drys of delta contend that we are not a drinking people in delta or utah that those who do happen to drink are not worthy of consideration and are in the minor ity they say that we are getting better and that all this hooey about kids and girls drinking and party ing Is all propaganda and that we are not bad like our neighbor states and that we do not want to imbibe the iniquitous liquid and that we want to show ourselves a shining ex ample of virtue and fortitude that it would exalt us in the eyes of the world should we take the step to say that we are opposed to the repeal because we are god s people and live in god gods s country and that we have obeyed his ills laws of temperance are doing so now and intend to keep on going as we are they contend that we are good and virtuous and that we should advertise the fact to the world of course it la Is not denied that whatever revenue there Is now that it goes to the bootlegger and the gangster but on the one side it Is claimed that the bootlegger will get worse and on the other that he will reform and get ashamed of himself and quit the writer believes that the prohibition has failed and should be repealed that it is obsolete and value leses that it has made matters worse and will continue to do so as long as it is tolerated and he will therefore vote tor for repeal and he ap peals to all honest people to vote likewise and thus show to all the world that we are self conscious and that our vote will reflect our conduct which brings forth this ireful reply we the following industrious in teer teg lous rious citizens deny the Imp implication that we are hypocrites we always have been shimmering moist sopping even to dripping and dont don t gainsay gainsa it nor preach otherwise in tact fact we have to wear galoshes in this so call ed arid land no matter whose it Is and we find much profit is supplying kouzes with liquid regalement be they boys or girls teeming with gen tillay or rubbing oft off riff raft raff not in isolated sheep camps but in the sanctity of the home we are regular drinkers honestly trying to rid a community of a surplus of
