farms of 0 the united states has been increasing ince 1928 the signify cant feature of this increase I 1 to that it has been confined largely to cows and calves but the number of steers has shown little increase the cow and heifer slaughter between the first half of 1932 has been the small est in years present conditions point to the fact that this class of cattle will be the largest larest lar est in the history of the country on january 1 1933 the number of cattle on feed in the corn belt on august 1st of this year was 5 per cent smaller than last year which indicates that the early supply of pf grain fed cattle will be smaller better finished cattle according to the demand will be sent to the mar ket this year the demind demand tor for feeder cattle dur ling ing the first part of the year waa was weak but recent reports from a number of cattle feeders indicate anten eions to purchase a considerably larger number of feeder cattle dur ing the remainder of 1932 than was purchased last year consumer Cons Con sumei demand for beet beef and veal as well as other meats has weakened almost steadily since 1930 being due almost entirely to the re in business activity and Is followed closely however by the pig then in order by lambs and steers it Is obvious that the welfare of the livestock industry of the state will be best beat obtained by a balancing ol 01 its lVe activities consequently some will feed dairy cattle to produce milk butter and cheese while others should be inter bated in fattening pigs lambs or cat tie A 60 50 ib ill shoat wala eat from 4 to 5 of ration but cheapens the teed feed cost ot of gain the addition ot of one of these supplements also adds materially to the health of the lambs in feeding beet cattle care should be exercised in balancing the ration for efficient production in a ser ies lea ot of feeding experiments 2 yr old steers gained about 1 ib lb per head dally daily when fed 27 pounds of alfalfa hay bay steers gained nearly 1 I 33 iba lbs per head dally daily when fed 3 32 2 pounds of 0 silage and only 11 ibs lbs of alfalfa in this test corn silage fed with alfalfa hay showed even a high er value than alfalfa hay per ton on account of the fact that it furnished dicarbo hydrates or fattening mater lal with which to balance the high protein content of the alfalfa A six months old steer weighing from to ibs lbs
