had the following resola tiofil to lay before business men resolution 13 the employees of the los angeles salt lake railroad Bail road being residents and tax payers of millard county and the employers being the largest single tax payer of said millard county having met in mass meeting on the evening of the ath day of may 1931 and WHEREAS the sole purpose of said mass meeting was for the further ance of the interests of the railroad company and its employees and WHEREAS it was definitely dished that the commercial auto trucks which are using public tax maintained hichwa s tor for the pur suit of their commercial enter enterprise prize are decidedly unfair anu anid un econom leal teal method of and WHEREAS the pat patt present and future welfare and prosperity of our county has been and Is depend ent largely upon the taxes and wag as s paid by the railroad company and WHEREAS the majority of the taxes collected in millard county tor for the purpose of Pup supporting porting our schools government and other pub lie activities are paid by the rail road company and its employees now therefore be it earnestly RESOLVED that a committee is ap pointed to represent the railroad employees to petition the authorize auth oriz led ed county officials in whom Is vest ed the of upholding law and order namely the offices of county attorney and the county sheriff to vigorously restrict the traffic en on our public highways to the limitations prescribed by the laews of municipal county state and federal governments by constien cons con clen piously insisting that truck operators restrict weight dimensions speed land handling of trucks or other con vey ances on public highways High waye to with the law and be it t tur fur ther that this petition not liot only be tor for the purpose of regular ing this competition to clon form with existing laws but also for the pur pose of safeguarding our citizens fram the consequences ot of excessive speed extreme width and county and the employers being the largest single tax payer of said county having met in mass meeting pta the evening of the ath day of allay 1931 and WHEREAS the sole purpose of the aforementioned masa mass meeting was tor for the furtherance of the interests of the employees and the railroad company by negotiating with the shippers of 0 millard county for a return or a continuance of making all shipments by rail and WHEREAS it was definitely dished at said mass meeting that the railroad company was entitled to this transportation business in pret prof prence to other commercially un sound and unfair competition tor for sufficient reasons aa al f hows 1 the welfare and prosperous ex stence of the county Is dependent in a large measure upon the rail road company and its employees a majority of the tax revenue of the county being collected from this source 2 the expansive of this country was primarily due to ithe the building of the railroad which owns its own right of way stations roundhouses shops and other tures 3 the railroads are built tor for transportation transport atlon ses and are ai 21 considerable enterprise while the trucks use and abuse highways built and maintained by tax money which is largely paid by the railroad and its employees 4 the trucks are largely account able tor for the present period of de pre Dres selon sion as they have taken the place of travelling tra velling salez salesmen men ufus dray men freight house truckers billing clerks and other employees former ly required in the operation and the maintenance of the railroads 5 the increased use of trucks on our highways without an equitable taxation for commercial comme roial purposes creates a decidedly unfair method of competition sub by public funds against a safe economical and dependable in de do of transportation governed by state and federal corn com missions 6 the increased use of trucks on our vur highways la is creating a growing i hazard to lighter plea pleasure ture cars the highways are built tor for our conven fence and comfort and for the bene it of pursuing our individual bust nesses and not f r commercial en terp rises which do not support our schools and civic governmental governments but paya payo only asmal a small value tax to the lo 10 bality in which the ovner aner resides 7 many communities are entirely or mostly so dependent upon rail tax or railroad payroll income and WHEREAS E AS the present and future welfare of the railroad company und its employees depend on enjoy ing a continuance and an increase lot freight handled by rail now therefore be it firmly RESOLVED that a committee is ap pointed to meet and negotiate with all merchants and other shippers in our bounty with the espres viela of making all shipments by rail and
