purpose of this discussion is to point out the way tor for a real change in your landscape As a general thing we all live more or less by habit we become accustomed to doing things the same way day after day and soon no effort or thought Is required to complete th the e days daya routine it is so easy and pleasant to live by this established procedure that few people ever make tho the necessary effort to get out of their vell worn ruts now not only Is this habit ot of living typical of our dally daily life but I 1 it t Is also typical 0 of our entire life many ot of us here in utah have established a habit ot of allowing our surroundings roun dings to become neglected rundown and almost disgraceful in ap pe arace we have lived with rickety fences tumbling barns unpainted buildings and disorderly landscapes so long that we now take them tor for granted as part of our life and do little to improve the situation this Is indeed a bad habit in this respect we are very different when compared with states in eastern united states the habits of the people in these other states are established la in such a fashion that they believe it la Is a necessity to keep their surroundings neat and respectable they have the habit of 0 repairing their fences every year just as many of 0 us have the habit of celebrating the twenty fourth of july every year this constant annual attention results in fences that are serviceable neat la in appearance and it must be admitted quite different from the fences typical ot of utah landscapes this same habit of tidiness Is also shown la in the general appearances of their home surroundings and their barnyards the farms in the states east of us are in general well kept in appearance and everything is in order the houses and the barns are painted the machinery Is stored under a shed or is in orderly arrangement in the farm yard and Is not left out in the snow all winter to rust away and deteriorate the people appear to have time to take care of their property and a general atmosphere ol of industry and thriftiness prevails these people have formulated desirable habits and their landscapes proudly acclaim the results now when these people accustoms tomed to their well kept surroundings come out west and see our neglected and dilapidated landscapes in millard county they are very much impressed but are impressed favorably because they know us only by what they see as they travel along the highways these tourists leave your county and the state with the idea that we wa are lazy and indifferent what eise else could they think when they see our fences our barns our homes and our dilapidated surroundings certainly we do not want this to con dinue many organizations boo boost stour our states natural scenery in an effort to entice more tourists to visit utah we all believe our tourist trade adds to the income of the state and it is increasing Is it desirable then to continue to have our out ot of state guests stream through our state and leave it with the definite and well founded conclusion that wo we are not progressive but rather a negligent and indifferent people it la is up to you to impress these people more I 1 favorably lots lets get busy here is a state wide landscape improvement committee consisting ot of representatives of all state organizations izat ions interested in this program they have suggested a goal tor for 1939 this is to repair all fences and make them neat to tear down or renovate all neglected barns and make them respectable andio and to clean up barnyards and home surroundings to make them respectable ings to make them presentable A central committee could be formulated tor for millard county with the same goals or similar objectives this central county commett could assist tees to get an organization under way that would bring the goals and objectives right down to the people procedures dates and other details should be formulated immediately so that everything wll wil be in readiness tor for a general spring landscape improvement pro campaign in mellard county lets forget that we do not like our neighbor because his cows ate our garden two years ago why not bury the ax in an old tree stump and forget trifling differences small town petty jealousies may be appropriate prop tor for less important occasions but when it comes to something that will improve the general level and tone of the whole people we ought to tile file our hatreds in the family bible where they will not be disturbed and work with our neighbors rather than against them
