Show "GREAT REDEEMER" IS TAKEN' FROM LIFE Maurace Tourneur's great screen ; production, "The Great Redeemer" which is .to be shown at the Kinema theatre next Thursday and Friday, tells a story that is so absorbing and thrilling that persons who behold it Will inevitably conclude that it is fiction fic-tion that it never could have happened hap-pened in real life. Such is, in fact, not the case. While "The Great Redeemer" was written by H. H. Van Loan and it is in the main a work of the imagina tion, its central theme is taken direct from life. It embodies an incident that happened in a prison at San Bernardino, Ber-nardino, California, two years ago. A Mexican was serving fifteen years there'for manslaughter. On the wall of his cell he painted a picture of the Crucifiction. It was a painting whose beauty attracted attention all over the state. As a direct result of the influence 'of this painting the Mexican was given a pardon by the governor of the state and is now a professional artist, making a living in Los Angeles. Angel-es. j The painting of the Crucifiction photograp'.ed in the production is a I copy of that on the wall of the Mexican's Mex-ican's cell in San Bernardino. The Priests who were interested in the I Tourneur production because of its 1 powerful appeal to the finest quali-, quali-, tise in its beholders, saw the paint-! paint-! ing and requested that it be given o them to be hung in their church. I This request, Mr. Tourneur gladly granted, and the painting is now on j view in the Roman Catholic Church ! at Glendalc, California. ATi- "Von l.nnn th snithnr nf thp "Great Redeemer" struck up an acquaintance ac-quaintance in Los Angeles with thej Mexican, and from him obtained thej story which he Incorporated in - h is J screen drama. This he embellished with a strong counterplot and some splendid love interest, and the finished production is said to possess great strength and uncommon interest. House Peters .and Marjorie Daw are the chief play-j ers in the all-star cast which inter-j jprets the production. Mr. Peters j plays Dan Malloy a two-gun bad man 'who is regenerated. Miss Daw is the; Girl, whose noble example first. Dan, on the right path. The magnificent scenery of the untrammelled un-trammelled west serves as a background back-ground for the mighty dramatic incidents in-cidents of the story. Jules Furth-I Furth-I man and Jack Gilbert scenarized Mr. I Van Loan's story and the production was directed by Clarence Brown under un-der the personal supervision r" Tourneur. Metro releases the picture as one of the most important super-specials. |
