Show THE VETERAN A bent old man 1b passing by, Hie head Is white, his eyes are dim, And there are many reasons why We who are young should envy him. Hie name is not besmirched with shame, The record he has made is clean; His heart is calm, his mind serene. He holds no hate, and fears no blame. And as he nears the closing scene Pride keeps hla withered cheeks aflame. The way that he has come is long. The end is near, his tasks are done; "Where foes beset him he was strong. The peace he claims has been well won; He dreads no terrors such as we Who see him pass may have to face; Beyond the danger of disgrace, He goes his w.-y triumphantly. And In his breast there is no place Reserved for frazzled enmity. His hands are thin, his steps are slow. But he has nothing to explain; His place Is with the brave whoVnow That they have not been tried in vain; lie feels no twinges of regret. And no remorse beclouds his days; No specters rise beforeTis gaze. No lurking fears his soul beset! He has no wish for thoughtless praise. No tragic errors to forget. His children have been guided past The pit falls that were deep and wide. And, needing him no more, at last. Have children of their own to guide! Love has enriched him: he Is free From foolish envy, and from care; He has nc cause to wonder where Or ask what his reward shall be; Salute! Let every head be bare, A veteran Is passing see! 8. E.
