Show THE GREATEST DAM IN THE WHOLE WORLD i 1 The construction of a dam at Boulder Boul-der canyon far greater in dimensions than any the world has known has j been proven feasible by the engineering engineer-ing studies carried on by the U. S. reclamation service during the past three years. Borings at several places plac-es both in Boulder canyon proper and ' in B-!ack canyon, the southorly con- jtinuation of Boulder canyon, have shown that bedrock conditions are satisfactory. The more southerly site, at what Is called Black canyon, appears to have certain important advantages ,over the sits in Boulder canyon proper, prop-er, although a dam at either site j would utilize the same great basin J for storage. j Among the advantages of the Black canyon site are its more convenient accessibility, the shorter distance to bedrock and the- greater Btorage capacity ca-pacity of a reservoir, presupposing n dam of equal height at either site. These apparent advantages indicate indi-cate that a saving of severad million dollars in construction costs will result re-sult from the selection of the lower site. The resultant storage reservoir will also be the largest In capacity of any in the world, being sufficient to accommodate the entire normal flow of the river for nearly two years If no water should be allowed to flow through the dam. The artificial lake so formed would extend up the river for something like one hundred miles with a broad arm some fifty miles In length occupying the valleys of the Virgin and Moapa rivers. The value of the conserved flood waters for the irrigation of new areas ar-eas of land in Arizona and California, Califor-nia, would alone justify the cost of the enterprise as an economic measure. mea-sure. The protection of the lives and the vast resources of the Imperial and Yuma valley from certain destruction de-struction bv the present unrestrained unrestrain-ed floods of the erratic river demand that, the enterprise be carried out as a cifpt-" f!rt. humanitarian measure. ttip vv-rrndhicts of something like 150 000 borsenower of hyrtro-elen-tric energv made available bv building build-ing the great dam, furnishes a perfect per-fect means for insuring that the investment in-vestment to be made hy the United S'n'es government shall be a profitable profi-table one. The rapidly growing west was developed de-veloped a demand for vastly more electrical energy than a survey of the future shows will be available from sources now under development. The Colorado river at Boulder canyon is ideally located for the development of power and its transmission to Lo? Angeles. San Francisco, Salt Lake Pbeonix, and practically the whoir area of the southwest. The lease hy the federal power bureau bu-reau of rights to develop the power at the Boulder canyon dam will rapidly rap-idly pay the entire cost of the great project without the necessity of as sessing any portion thereof on thr communities directly benefittec: through flood control andl irrigation Las Vegas Age. a |
