NEWS BUREAU Holders of the Normal scholarships scholar-ships of the University of Utah, in all parts of the state are being notified noti-fied by that institution of the change in the law made at the last session of the State legislature. At that time the number of such scholarships was reduced from 400 tv 100. The University is endeavoring to determine, before August first, just how many of the present holders desire de-sire to continue their work this fall. There are more than 25 Oholders of the scholarships who have not completed com-pleted their courses, which may be for either two, thre or four years. The Normal scholarships were originated! ori-ginated! to encourage more students to enter the teaching profession, and to raise the standards. At the present time the standards are much higher and the supply of available teachers better trained, so the need is not so imperative now. . Last year the school of education, in which the holders must register, had an enrollment of 760 collegiate students. This is the largest number ever registered, in one school at the University. and is a larger number of strictly collegiate students than In many colleges in the intermountain country. No new appointments can be made either through the county sunperln-tendents sunperln-tendents or the State School office, or by the University until it is determined deter-mined exactly how many students holding scholarships last year desire to return. The scholarship ir. worth $25.00 a year toward registration fees. It Is the desire of the State officials to use the scholarships for worthy students, rather than those who could pay the fees. |
