Show COUNTY .U.K.N T SIR'KS j v. irn not; ruojECTj I 11. A. Christiansen was appointed as county ait c-nt in IVawr county in V.tgust J'.'H. and Ins been there .tr since. of the most appar- .":t results of his eiitht yearrs' work : the ni.i:.;.t'j jn '.lie complexion ot ihe hogs of the county. Sandy in its various hut's from dark cherry to light tan has come to be the popular p.d universal shade in Beaver hog society. The few porkers that cannot can-not boast an unbroken color, at '.east have the sandy background for their black or white spots. Mr. Chirstianseii early showed the farmers that he believed what lie was preachin gabout raising better hogs, when he purchased some well-bred well-bred registered Duroel Jerseys for himself. He has maintained a few pure breds ever since. The farmers not rush into pure breds. A few started raising breeding stock, but only part of them continued. At present pres-ent there are three such breeders in the county. The thing which the farmers far-mers did adopt unanimously was the use of pure bred Duroc-Jersey bonrs Three years all the boars in the county were pure bred Durocs. That same condition exists today wit htwo exceptions. One of these exceptions was- caused by a man moving in from Idaho and bringing his livestock live-stock with him. Before the days of the county agent ag-ent just a few hogs, fattened on acorns, were shipped out of the county. Since his time about 100 cars of hogs have been shipped out, Co-operative marketing was a big factor i neffecting this standardization standardiza-tion of breed. It meant more money to have well bred, uniform hogs. Under Un-der the co-operative plan of selling, each farmer received the actual returns re-turns from his lot of hogs on the market, minus the expense of getting get-ting them there. Differences in net returns were soon traced to pure bred boars which furnished a very tangible reason for their introduction introduc-tion into all herds. The improvement in stock has not only been confined to Beaver county; adjoining counties coun-ties have secured breeding stock from this center. A |
