Show j Decoration Day Fittingly Observed by Local People Milford paid a fitting tribute to the valiant Americans, who rest in the City cemetery after having served by land or sea, in the nation's wars. Receiving tributes of praise and gratitude gra-titude at the exercises held. ' The ceremonies commenced at 10 o'clock by the band playing national airs in front of Hotel Atkin, as a ' means for assembling the citizens. At 10:15 Mayor Hubbell, chairman of the day, announced from the balcony the reason of the meeting, and after a selection1 from the band, Mr. Leonard Leon-ard Bowen was ntroduced. Mr. Bow-en Bow-en gave a masterful speech, portraying portray-ing the honor, joy and advantag it was to be a citizen of the United States. Veterans of the World war, the Spanish-American war, Civil war, i-ioiman battalion and war with Mexico, Mex-ico, were included in his masterful way of paying tribute to these herioc men. He also portrayed that the best government which desires to make the 'people happy, knows how to make them happy, is our country. Dr. Parrish was the next speaker, and showed up how good results caiae from such services. He said American people never ran away from a difficult question, or from a well-defined duty. He closed his remarks re-marks by reading a poem entitled, "Flander's Field." j Aftc r a selection from the band, j a procession was formed in the fol- ! lowing wav and marched to 'the ! cemetery: Band, ex-soldiers in uniform, flag i :arers, marine and sailors on each side; Five points of the star by Service Ser-vice Star Legion, flower bearers, , citizens in automobiles. The following ex-service men marched in the procession: Will Miller, Chas. Milltfr, Theo. j Kronholm, Harold Ryan, Chas. Hoi- j lis, Bert Ryssman, Jake Weber, Walt ! Weber, Frank C. Henry, ' Clarence j Grimshaw, Clarence Sweet, Dr. Par-lish, Par-lish, Leo. Bohn, Geo. Krienke, Frank Farmer, Wm. Graff, J. R. McMillan. At the cemetery, Rev. Root offered j a beautiful prayer in keeping for the i occasion and solemn stillness reigned, I as he implored our Heeavenly Father to bless the living as well as those who had gone before. Like a peal from Heaven's artillery his words rang out to every listening ear in the cemetery. j At the War Mother's grave, Mrs. : A. J. Atkin placed a beautiful floral wreath and Mrs. Ford read a poem in keeping with the occasion. Every soldier's grave, was tenderly sought out, so that no rastng place was over- ; looked. Mrs. Root strewed flowers at i every grave and a salute was fir2d j by Harold Ryan and Chas Hollis. j Mrs. Ford also placed a small flag; on the graves. ' . j The American Legon and Service j Star Legion had charge. j It was estimated that about 600 j people were at the cemetery. Every one pronounced this recognition of Decoration Day a wonderful and successful suc-cessful event. "Peace rules the day when reason rules the mind." j Words of appreciaton was heard ; on all sides for the U. P. band. Their: music was wonderful and the melodi-ous melodi-ous airs sent a thrill of wonder to ; every listener. The committee ex- j tends their gratitude and will help t the band in any way to reciprocate ' "or this generous work. |
