Show WAR WAGED ON BARK BEETLES Ogden, Utah- The magnificent stands of Yellow Pine- on the Grand Canyon National park and the adjoining ad-joining Kaibab National forest are threatened with destruction says D''s-tric D''s-tric Forester R. I The National Park service of the Department of the Interior and the Forest service of the Department of Agriculture have been ' cooperating to fight this infestation following a survey by agents of the Bureau of Entomology and acting under the advice ad-vice of that Bureau in the work of control. Last year a total of 5,683 infested trees were felled and peeled at a cost of $1.57 per tree. This checked the infestation, but the work must be continued before it Is fully controlled. control-led. Plans for the coming season in volve the treatment of about 8,000 trees located in eight centers of infestation, in-festation, of which five are In the Kaibab Kai-bab National forest, Involving an estimated es-timated expense of $8,000, and three are in the National park, requiring $2,000 for their treatment. The secretary of the Interior has jo'ned with, the secertary of agriculture agricul-ture in asking for $10,000 to cover the cost of work this season. Under the cordial cooperation between the two departments the work on both the park and forest will he handled by the same crew of about 40 men, thus reducing overhead expenses and permitting more beetles to be killed with the same money than would othorwlse be the case.
