Show DERN HAS TOUGH TIME WINNING Saturday evening, March 22, the wrestling fans of this section of tne country were given a treat in the shape of wrestling and boxing at the new Firemen's hall. The first preliminary between De-los De-los Tanner and Ralph Tanner wa extra good and the boys gave the best they had. The second! preliminary between Jack McKeon and Ray Tanner was easily the star bout of the preliminaries, prelimin-aries, and one was a right hander and the ether a southpaw. The third between Madsen and Limb, was good, only Madsen found out that his stomach was tender and vows he will be in training next time. The special was Carter vs. Art Smertz, the wrestling Instructor of Sal! Lake commercial club. This was especially good and) credit must be given Carter for his showing with Smertz. Following this, Smertz challenges anyone in the audience for a 15 minute, min-ute, bout, which was promptly ac cepted by George Harris, our popular popu-lar heavy-weight, and we saw 15 minutes of the best exhibition ever shown in town. Smertz is a master of the game in all departments and was especially clever as he had such' a heavy opponent. We should like to see Smertz in action again as everyone was well pleased with this bout. Referee Whitted called for a shower of silver for Smretz, who wrestled free, and the fans responded respond-ed nobly as they always do in Mil-ford. Mil-ford. Next came the main event ot the evening Castle vs. Dern, and every one agTeed that it was the fastest and best bout ever staged In this part of the country. During the first fall Dern seemed to have an advantage in strength ane cleverness, and showed that he was a bonefidle champion in every department de-partment of the game. At the end of 20 minutes of fast wrestling, the fall was conceded to Dern with a scissors and arm hold. After five minutes of rest they came back strong and Dern tried for his favorite aeroplane, but was blocked at every turn by Castle. Then Castle started with headlocks and kept after them until the champion cham-pion was groggy and on the last clinch Dern clinchedl standing up ani Castle clamped on a right arm head-lock head-lock and stayed with the hold until a fall was given after twenty minutes min-utes of hard wrestling. However the "'lampion fought until the las: minute, making it hard for Referee Whitted to render a decision. After this fall the champion was plainly in distress audi asked for full time of rest ten minutes. They both came back in good condition with Castle showing stronger, and it looked a sure win for Castle. Dern tried his aeroplane two or three times, but was blocked every time. At the end of 13 minutes the fall was Riven to the champion with arm lock and scissors and liar arm hold. After the bout Castle challenged Dern to a return match within sixty clays and the tans figure there will be a new champion if they meet again. Timekeeper Jack Sherwood shou'u" be complimented on his good' work while Referee Whitted pleased ail of the fans and was complimented by the champion for his decisions. |
