Show THE UTILITIES COMMISSION Judge Greenwood. chairman of the Utah Public Utilities commission, commiss-ion, accompanied by his reporter, Mr. Cook, were in Milford last Thurs day, and heard several matters concerning con-cerning transportation. Mir. Wm. Morris of Newhouse, requested re-quested better trainservice for that town. Mr. H. Davis thought that as he had a license to- carry passengers an run a passenger stage between Milford Mil-ford audi Newhouse, that Jo-. Dear-don Dear-don who has the mail contract to Garrison via Newhouse should not carry passengers between Milford and Newhouse. The judge wa.s inclined in-clined to think so too, and he told the two parties that they had bet-i ter try to work in harmony, but that Deardon or his driver should not solicit so-licit for passengers. The time of the afternoon session was occupied in hearing the complaint com-plaint of Ezra Barton against the Utah Transportation company for over-charging passengers and for -not giving satisfactory service. Also Mr. Barton had an application for a license li-cense to carry passengers and run a passenger stage between Beaver and Milfordi. The Utah Transportation company was represented by Attorney O. A. Murdock and Mr. Barton by Sam. Cline. A large number of witnesses testified tes-tified that they had paid $2.00 each way for riding between Beaver and Milford, whereas the fare allowed by the commission was $2.00 one way and 3.50 for the round trip. Each witness was asked if they or any o 'them had paid in advance and all answered "no." One witness testified that the stage had gone off and left him once in Beaver when he wanted to ride to Milford. Stan Tattresall, driver, for the Utah Transportation company, tes tifiedthat he had never charged anyone any-one or refused any one a round trip for $3.50. if paid or offered to he paid in advance. He said he had been driving stage between Beaver and Milford for ten or twelve years and in that time he might have left some passengers, but never one in-tionadly. in-tionadly. His explanation as to how the witness happened" to be left, brought a smile to the face even of the judge. Roy Van Wormer said he wished to call the attention' of the commission commis-sion to the fact that he had an application ap-plication on file with the commission commiss-ion for a permit to run a passenger stage between -Beaver and Milford, and if the permit of the Utah Transportation Trans-portation company should be revoked revok-ed or if a.nother permit, was to be given, giv-en, he thought his application should be given consideration prior to Barton's. Bar-ton's. At the close of the hearing Judge Greenwood said that the reason or excuse for a round trip price was the guarantee that the passpngPr would return on the stage within a specified speci-fied time and not return with someone some-one else, and also to be sure (hat the company got the money, anil that paying at the end of two single trips did not entitle the passenger to the reduced fare. The only way for anyone any-one to avail themselves of tbp rp-dnced rp-dnced fare was by paying for the round trip in advance. Ho also said that tickets should be used and payment for them made in advance whetehr single rides or return trips. The judge said the commhiion would take the question under advisement ad-visement and render its decision later. |
