Show A LECTURE ON CHRISTIAN SCIENCE-FRANK BELL j i A large and appreciative audience j composed of people from all parts of the county, greeted Frank Bell, C. S. of Philadelphia last night and listened lis-tened to him lecture on the principles princi-ples and teachings of Christian Science. Sci-ence. Beaver in particular was represented rep-resented by a large delegation, who i came over in autos, returning to their homes after the lecture. Mrs. Annie J. Atkin, who is a prominent prom-inent member of the Church of Christ Scientist in Southern Utah, presided at the meeting and in introducing the speaker said: The good being done by Christian '.Science is ever growing and increasing. increas-ing. Though the growth in numbers is not as large as some expect, our (growth in good continues and will continue as long as this blessed truth is practiced and lived up to, if by only on-ly a few. It is not a debatable question, for it provides the proofs of its correctness correct-ness as shown in the daily healing of sickness, sin, discouragement, and all mental ills. Our beloved leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us to "follow your leader only as far as she follows Christ." Tonight we have with us a gentleman gentle-man who will fell us of the way to follow on that important path that Mrs. Eddy has mapped out for all mankind. The child is above all else willing to learn. He has no preconceived opin ion to defend, no pet theories to advance, ad-vance, his desire to learn is equaled only by his willingness to learn, and Jesus, said, "Except ye become converted con-verted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven. I trust we will all be receptive of the great and 'good teachings of Mary Baker Eddy, that will be given out by Frank Bell, mem her of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church- The First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Mass. Mr. Bell in his lecture, said Christian Chris-tian Science has been called the science sci-ence of right thinking, because the practice of Chrjstian Science is the activity by which wrong thoughts give place to right thoughts, that the fruits of right thinking may appear instead of the fruits of wrong thinking. think-ing. Control of Thought . "All there is to living is thinking," said the lecturer, and he gave illustrations illus-trations of how conditions of living are primarily conditions of thinking. This, he said, would not be pleasant to contemplate we're it true that thinking is more or less beyond control. con-trol. "Christian Science," he added, "shows the willing student not only how to distinguish right thought from wrong thought, but how to hold to the one and reject the other, and thus to have dominion over the shaping shap-ing of his career." The essentially mental nature of evil was explained, attention being called to the fact that successful resistance re-sistance of evil requires a knowledge of what evil is and how it can be met and mastered at its source. The speaker referred to the increasing recognition of the fact that "the evil 'called disease is the outward expression expres-sion of effect of a mental state." He said the growing practice of Christian Chris-tian Science, "In which all manner 'of disease is healed by treatment applied ap-plied solely to mental conditions, is helping mankind to see that disease in all its aspects is the working out of wrong thinking." This he added, was not necessarily conscious and deliberate wrong thinking. Illustrations Illustra-tions were given to the extent to which the common daily experiences of living express "years and years of thinking" on the part of others, to which we unconsciously respond when we ride on trains, jvalk the streets, live in houses, etc. Therefore, There-fore, "the mental causes of disease are not necessarily confined to influences influ-ences of which the victim of disease may be aware." Christian Science, he said, "proves disease to be mental by healing it by a mental method." ' The Authentic Textbook The book, "Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, was described as the textbook of Christian Science, In which are set forth "the rule and (method of the science of right thinking, think-ing, what it is and how it may be learned and applied." Persons who Studied this book in the hope of learn ing how to practice hypnotism or mes merism, to conquer pain with mental men-tal suggestion or will power, to heal diseases by calling in names, to overcome over-come evil by Ignoring It, or to do anything else absurd or unnatural, 'declared the speaker, were bound to be disappointed. He said the title of the book showed that its purposo was to prove not ouly that health is a matter of science or knowledge, that is to say mental, but that "the knowledge that Is synonymous with health is religious knowledge, to be found in the Bible, and that "the mentality that truly heals Is not the human mind, but the infinite intelligence intelli-gence , God." The book, he said, uetB forth not a theory to be argued, but 'a method to be tried and judged by I results, the keynote of Christian Science Sci-ence being demonstration. ; The method of Christian Science 'treatment was illustrated In a description de-scription of how it Is applied in the case of the disease called intemperance. intemper-ance. False appetites, the speaker (-.aid, were traceable to wrong mental concepts which yielded readily to the right mental activity of "scientific religion." Helpful in Business. Business men find the solution of their business troubles in Christian Science, the speaker declared; that (continued to page Ave) CHRISTIAN" SCIENCE LECTURE ' (continued from page one) is, provided they are willing to give up trying to gain seemingly worthwhile worth-while ends by means of wrong acts. The lecturer quoted "a man of worldwide world-wide reputation for business success" as saying: My experience has taught me that the effort to make a man buy something he does not need, in the long run defeats its own purpose. This was cited as illustrating the fact that the modern business man "is catching a glimpse of the operation of divine law in business." Christian Chris-tian Science Helps the business man' to see this more clearly, according to the lecturer, "and to avail himself of the operation of divine law in bus-ness bus-ness in constantly increasing degree." Christian Science teaches him that a right result never is due to chance; that the presence of such qualities as justice, truth and love, in a business busi-ness transaction, are "certain signs of the presence of the true God, a presence necessarily active and good, and having a direct relation to ultimate ulti-mate success." The Christian Scientist Scien-tist in business was described as a trained observer of mental conditions possessing all the attendant legitimate legiti-mate advantages of being able to think rightly. A Substantial Movement The activities of the Christian Science Sci-ence Church were described by the speaker. It has 1S00 branches In all parts of the world, and new ones being be-ing organized at an average rate of one per week. There are six thousand thous-and registered practicioners of Christian Chris-tian Science, devoting all their time to the work. The lectures last year were heard by one million three hun dred thousand persons. The church gives liberally in public pub-lic emergencies, and its members do , their share An support of worthy charities. A steady stream of money and supplies has gone through this church to war sufferers in all lands since the war began. This church "makes no demands on the eommnn-it.v." eommnn-it.v." Tt builds handsome church edifices without solicitation of funds from outsiders, and dedicates them free from debt. Tts un-to-date publishing pub-lishing house employs seven hundeed persons. Issues Mrs. Eddy's works, also quarterly, monthly and weekly periodicals, and a daily newspaper, and other literature In eleven languages. lan-guages. Thirty American legislatures have recognized the practice of Christian Science by providing that It shall not he subtect to medical Interference Interfer-ence or regulation, and this recognition recogni-tion has stood the test in courts of law. There Is no lack of legal right to practice Christian Science in the other States. RellrIon and Wnr Good oltizenshin Is a natural product of right thinking." said the sneaker. "One would search the teachings of Christian Science In vain for justification for the slightest default in one's support of a right-eous right-eous government, in a just cause." He then explained that Christian Scientists are doing their full share in the great war. but that they had been spared much of trie mental burden bur-den of the times by reason of the effect of their religion in dissolving doubt and allaying fear. When war came, the Christian Scientist did not have to "lower his concept of Deity . by assenting to the wicked theory that a righteous God must needs use evil to accomplish good." nor "Stupefy "Stup-efy his spiritual sense with that dis- ' ;creditable substance for straightforward straightfor-ward thinking, the familiar theological theolog-ical narcotic, that the ways of providence provi-dence are jlnserutable." Christian Science, the speaker said, gave Its adherents a rational explanation of all things. He added that when "the Christianity that is Christian Science" Sci-ence" is practiced universally, "war , will be no more because fear and hate, lust and greed. superstition and false theology, phases of wrong thinking that promote and permit war,, will have been deprived of their claim to dominion over man, and the : supremacy of natural good will have !been demonstrated in the affairs of the nations." In closing, the lecturer paid grateful grate-ful tribute to Mrs. Eddy. who. he said, was entitled to high place ! among those who had been persecuted perse-cuted for righteousness sake." because be-cause of what she had bravely met . "in order that the way to health and holiness might be made clear for you and me." |
