Show LETTERFROM 'OVER THERE' Mrs. Palmer received a letter from Wesley Carlisle, . a former Milford boy. Wesley was employed by the Jefferson Mercantile Co. at the time of his enlistment and mode his home with the Palmer family. ' He was the first boy to enlist from Milford. Pear Mother Palmer I know that you think that I ha'e forgotten you. Although from an appearances it would look like I haven't. It has been three months since I have written you and I have not heard from you since so I am beginning to think that you have forgotten me. I wrote you about the second week in January thanking thank-ing you for your Christmas present. I am afraid you did not receive the letter though, or you would have written sooner. Taking it for granted that you did not receive my last letter, I will thank you again and alsoMrs. Ward and the girls for their remembrances at Christmas time. I was then, at Treguier and you can tell Alice that I took a bath on Christmas day and used the washrag that she made for1 me. The cake was sure great. Well, I have another little thing to tell you now. I am one of those things they call a Chief Yeoman. 1 received the rating at Treguier and it dates from January 1st. I have been wearing the new uniform now for only about three weeks. I just landed in Breast, France on the 3rd of March and got my outfit after I came here. You just ought to see me now, alL dolled up in my uniform with brass buttons). A mwearing .. a blue suit, just as in Civilian life, and real shirts and collars and every thing. It is just like being a. "Re-, cruit" all over again. I am working in the. Personnel office at Naval headquarters, in Brest. Have charge of the officers' personnel file. a file of all officers in France and all ships based at or operating from Brest. It is quite a job, too as things are moving very fast and lots of changes and I have to keep up with them all. so that when asked, I can tell just where an officer is, when he went and where he came from. I sure wish I kuew when I am going go-ing to be crossing the pond again'. - It looks like it would be a long time yet for me because I am a regular Navy four-year enlisted man and they are holding us and shipping the reserves home as much as possible. Oh, well, perhaps my time will come some day and when it does. I will appreciate it all the more. I sure would like to see you very much and also all the rest of the people I used to know'ln Milford. I suppose Milford is just about the same as ever, perhaps a few more changes since you wrote me last. How is the flu now? Hope it has all disappeared. I suppose some of the 'Boys' are returning now and things are more lively. Most all of them have a story all of their own to tell and the air will be full of them for some time to come. .Although 1 am not having the best time of my life, I am not suffering suf-fering any discomforts of lite. I have good meals, good place to sleep clean place to work and things fixed very convenient so what more could one ask for at a time like this? There are a few things such as nine o'clock liberty that makes it rather inconvenient incon-venient at times no real amusement amuse-ment of any sort. Of course there are lots of dances, but about a doz-n doz-n women to dance with three or Tour hundred boys, so you can see that one would have much more pleasure by not attending. Never get to see a show on account of hav- ing to be oft the streets by nine. p. m. I will certainly make up for all that I have lost when I get back to Real Civilization. I am still enjoying enjoy-ing good health and. that is about the main thing. When T came to Brest. I found about four of the boys that I went through Yeoman school at San Faan-cisco. Faan-cisco. with. Went out to one of the big ships taken over from the Germans Ger-mans and found three more of v fellows from San Francesco. We have furnished the Crews for thr German ships, the Patrica. Graf Y"' orsoe and Kaiserin Auguste Victoria. They are all large ships which made a lot of work for this office. Tt ru down our force some though and we won't have to worry about them more. Well Mother. I am ahou to run out of news, so think T had better ring off for this time and will try to write more often. I hope to hear from you soon. My best regards to all. lovingly. Wesley. |
