Show HON. J.F. TOLTON RED CROSS TALK The Red Cross meeting at the high school auditorium last Wednesday night was not largely attended. A program was presented which was deserving of a large audience. Dr. H. C. Hunter, president of the Milford chapter, called the meeting to order and made a brief statement of the origin and growth of the Red Cross organization. He stated that the local chapter now has a membership member-ship of 327. Misses Aleen Miller and Nell Ferguson Fer-guson played a piano duet which was well executed and well received. Prof. Herman Wells, principal of the county high school, then gave a common sense talk which was prefaced pref-aced by a story of two orators one of whom always received congratulations congratula-tions upon his splendid effort because be-cause of its well rounded phrases and elocutionary effects which were, however, soon forgotten. The other left his hearers with a desire to "do the thing," to get something done. "We need to mobilize the hearts ana souls of men and women for this work," to get the thing done. Mrs. Beth Martin sang "the Star-Spangled Star-Spangled Banner" and responded to an encore with "Yankee Doodle," which quite won the audience. Hon. J. F. Tolton of Beaver addressed ad-dressed the meeting. Mr. Tolton, though suBstituting for Rev. Ownby who was unable to be present on account ac-count of serious illness, gave a stirring stir-ring talk showing the wonderful growth of the Red Cross since its organization or-ganization in the 60's. Before this war it had a membership of 200,000 ; before the present drive for membership mem-bership began it had a membership of 5,000,000, It is hoped and expected ex-pected that -by Christmas Eve the membership will have been increased to 15,000,000. The meeting was closed by the audience singing "America," led by Prof. Wll Morris, with Mrs. Ingols at the piano. |
