Show BREAK WITH MEXICO IS NEAR. Department Officials Awaiting Reply to Washington Note. Washington. State department officials of-ficials are awaiting a reply to the note warning the Mexican government that any further molestation of William O. Jenkins, American consular agent at Puebla, who has been arrested twice iu connection with his recent abduction abduc-tion by bandits, would seriously affect the relations between the United States and Mexico. . While the text of tlie American government's gov-ernment's communication has not been made public, the summary published by the state department indicated that it was one of the sharpest ever sent to the Carranza government. Discussing the general Mexican situation, sit-uation, state department officers revealed re-vealed that before the -rTa war the army general staff estimated that complete com-plete intervention in Mexico by ' the American government would require 450,000 men operating over a period of three years. Present estimates were not made available, but it is known that army officials hold that the force necessary at this time would be much less because be-cause of the increased army equipment, equip-ment, such as motorized transport, artillery and airplanes. |
