Show Bad System STATE BOARD DELAYS ROADS The News is indebted to County Commissioner White for a better understanding un-derstanding of the' road situation in Beaver county. As a matter of fact about all that the County Commissioners have to do with road building is fixing the tax levy to raise the funds for the purpose. The State Road Commission Commis-sion handles the funds and says when, where and how the money shall be expended. The County commissioners com-missioners have complied with the requirements of the Commission to secure the co-operation and federal funds for the road from Newhousb to Beaver. In Jact, there is $30,00u available for the improvement of that road. The. County Commissioners Commission-ers urged that the work be done last May when the ground was in excellent excell-ent condition to work. At that time the improvement could have been made better and more economically than at any time of the year. The State Commission declared that the work should not be undertaken until after June 1st. Now it would be foolish to try to do efficient work on the highway. To do the work now would be a waste of funds. Unless, of course, a concrete -road is to be built. As $30,000 would not build more than about three miles of concrete con-crete road of sufficient durability to withstand the traffic sustained by the Beaver-Milford-Newhouse highway, it is 'presumed that a thorough improvement im-provement of the natural roadbed Is all that is contemplated. It is not the fault of the County Commissioners Commission-ers that our roads are not in better condition. They have made the funds available, they have urged the improvement, im-provement, but 'under the lawthey cannot do more. Right there is the fault. The money raised by Beaver county taxes should be expended by Beaver county commissioners for Beaver county roads. They are in a position to know what is needed. They best know when, how and where the money should be expended.. expend-ed.. And they are here to see that the work is done and that we get value val-ue received for the taxpayers' money. As the Newhouse-Milford-Beaver road has been regularly designated as one of five in the State to be im-oroved im-oroved in conjunction with the fed eral road fund, it is probable that the State Commission will wake up in time to get something done this Fall. State Auditor Ririe and Engineer Browning are now on their way here to inspect the road. These inspection inspec-tion trips are perhaps necessary under un-der the present system, but their expense ex-pense is something which could be avoided and more of the taxpayers' money saved if the local commissioners commission-ers bad the power to have the work done. |
