Show iiFdoeSx'thelp the situation Q TATE AUDITOR RIRIE'S reply to the O criticism of the News of the State Road Commission published last week, does not strengthen the case for the State Commission. It is foolish to claim that a State Commission of three men who live in the same community can make a junketing jun-keting tr;r) once or twice each year and know what is best for the country roads of every section of the State. If the coun-. coun-. ty commissioners of each county could " spend the money they have to raise for roads, on the roads in their respective counties they could spend it when the conditions are right for doing the work - best and most economically. The intimation intima-tion Mr. Ririe makes that eacn county commissioner might decide to make a good road by his own place to the exclusion exclu-sion of other roads if given the authority to use road money, is a very narrow view to take of the matter. The voters would see to that. And, too, we believe that the average county commissioner has the good of his entire county at heart and would take an interest and pride in seeing the main thoroughfares of his county kept in good condition. The fact that Mr. Ririe says we "have nothing of which to complain" is evidence enough that the miserable condition of the State Highway even, which is the principal artery of public pub-lic travel in Beaver county, does not bother both-er him. Neither he nor Ris neighbors have to travel it except on the junketing-trips junketing-trips once or twice each year, and then in-a in-a big auto. It was within the power of the State Commission to have our State Highway put into tip-top condition last May which would have given us a decent road all summer. They did nothing. The present series of dust ruts east of Milford is the result. If the county commissioners commission-ers had been empowered to do the work they would have been glad to do it and every taxpayer would have. been a committee com-mittee of one to make life miserable for -them until they did do the work. |
