Show i MORE SULPHUR NEEDED. Berious shortage of sulphur, an essential in the production of munl-j tlons, may mean the opening of more I sulphur Tleposits in Utah. Lack of sufficient is a grave danger, and it j Is said that unless something Is im mediately undertaken the supply of sulphur something that will within with-in the next few months furnish not less than 45,000 tons of sulphur a month one or two things will happen. Either the new. government govern-ment explosive plants that are now approaching completion will be without with-out material for their operation, or certain Industries will have to suspend. sus-pend. The Industries affected by the possible pos-sible Bhutting off of the' sulphur supply sup-ply would be those producing paper both news print and the better grades of printing paper and those producing pro-ducing fertilizers, the latter an essential es-sential In the production of increased increas-ed crops asked for. To this may bcr added certain important phases of the steel industry. Mining men of this state think Utah could assist very materially in supplying more sulphur. One haa said: "There is an Immense amount of sulphur In Utah If the government needs It. The pyrite sulphur extracted ex-tracted from metals is much more1 available than the natural sulphur and Its quantity at the present time is unlimited. The field of activity for It In this state is practically undeveloped un-developed on a large scale for the manufacture of munitions of war." Natural sulphur beds in Utah occur oc-cur In the northeastern part of Beaver Bea-ver county on the Millard county line; In Emery county along the San Rafael river in the San Rafael swell and on Cedar mountain, according ac-cording to the United States geological geolog-ical survey reports. There are only six smelters extracting ex-tracting sulphur and are doing so only on a small scale for personal use. With the advent of government govern-ment smelters, or even additions to the present plants, the possibilities of such an industry In this state would be unlimited, mining engineers state. |
