Show THE CITY ELECTION THERE was great excitement in Milford Mil-ford last Tuesday all day. -From 7 o'clock a. m. until 7 p. m. the streets were thronged with public spirited citizens citi-zens getting the busy merchants .and stay-at-homes out to the polls to vote. It was city election day. There was no issue of "wet" or "dry" to stir up strife and bitter feeling. It was just a plain 'issue of Efficiency and Community Spirit. There was a. marked desire upon the part of every voter to cast his or her ballot for the men who would take the most interest in his job of public service with the single purpose of making mak-ing Milford a cleaner and better city and a more comfortable and attractive place in which to live. Whoa, mule ! back up ! That is the way the story should read, but truth and veracity compel a , different tale. ' Until noon there were only ten votes cast. After noon there was a little more activity, but no one seemed to care who was elected nor what any candidate stood for in the matter of public service. ser-vice. All the men nominated were good men. Maybe that accounts for the lack of interest shown in the outcome.' But . how many voters took' the trouble to 'find out whether the candidates stood for civic improvements, better streets, cleaner alleys, uniform tree planting, enforcement of the ordinance against loose stock, sewer extension, better management of the water system, placing plac-ing the cemetery upon a common sense business basis and under careful man-' agement, cutting off unnecessary expenses, ex-penses, demanding more efficient service ser-vice from employes of the city, keeping the public informed of the doings and needs of the city, holding regular meetings meet-ings in a place where there is room and opportunity for citizens both men and women to come and confer with the members of the Board regarding public pub-lic matters. There was no such interest shown. And until there is more interest shown in these things by the voters of Milford it will be quite remarkable 'if there is elected a Board that will take up such active service for the community of its own initiative. But there is an opportunity for such a Board to make an excellent showing and record in the coming two years. |
