You have assisted ' in two Liberty Loans and have been 1 largely responsible for their success; I you have helped the Red Cross drive. 1 placing Utah in the foremost rank.! : and you have assisted in many ways, j The nation is now asked to sub-I sub-I scribe a fund of about S4fi.00n.niiO' I to be used in welfare work for the I soldiers of this country, bore and' abroad. Another call has come to American Ameri-can patriotism, not for the Red Cross: nor for the Liberty Loan, but for the; purpose of providing funds for making mak-ing our American soldier boys aa comfortable and as happy as the terrible ter-rible conditions of war will permit. Heretofore the boys of our army have been left too much to the lowest forms of amusement to vary the monotony of their lives. Now it is proposed to provide them with the .right kind of amusement, with libraries and with opportunities for social activities of the most wholesome whole-some and enjoyable character. It is the fondest desire also to protect them from thevicious effects of immorality im-morality and drunkenness. The fund is known as the "Soldiers' "Sold-iers' Welfare Work Fund," and is to be disbursed under the, direction of the War -Department, the Young Men's Christian Association and the Young Women's Christian Association, Associa-tion, organizations of international scope and of the loftiest purposes. Of this fund Utah has been asked to raise $100,000 during the week of November 11th to 19th, inclusive. The campaign will be state-wide. Every loyal Utah citizen will be given a'n opportunity to contribute to this splendid cause. The campaign in the State will be under the general direction of the State Council of Defense A committee commit-tee of prominent citizens will form the fund committee, with David A. Smith as chairman, and will have the immediate direction of the campaign. In the various counties the County Councils of Defense will supervise the drive. In Beaver county John F. Tolton is chairman of the Council of Defense and w-ill assume charge of securing subscriptions for the fund. The allottment of Beaver county is $550. If the fund is to be raised within the week assigned for the campaign the most vigorous kind of effort is necessary. Citizens of the county are urged to make a prompt response to this call, which requires but a small personal sacrifice but, in the aggregate, will mean a tremendous amount of good for the boys In khaki who are offering their lives In the service of their country. |
