It is the story of a wild, spirited girl whose naive charm and vivacity upset a California Cali-fornia mining town of 1870. As portrayed by Anne Shirley, this feminine firecracker is a love-hungry love-hungry girl whose readiness to fight for what she wants divides the community into warring factions. fac-tions. ' Sunday and Monday ' Five distinguished actors of peculiarly pe-culiarly contraating characteristics, characteris-tics, four of them as lovers, were required to impersonate the men who figured in the life of glamorous glamor-ous Peggy O'Neal in "The Gorgeous Gor-geous Hussy" which comes to the Firmage theatre Sunday -and Monday. Jackson himself, shielded her from the savage attacks of Washington society. John Eaton, Secretary of War, eventually married mar-ried her, but her first love was for "Bow" Timberlake, the gay young naval officer who married her and sailed away-, to be killed, John Randolph of Virginia- -loved her ! from childhood but lost her. A ' newspaper man was her friend and loyal aide. President Jackson is '-.impersonated - by . Lionel Barry-more, Barry-more, Robert'Taylor plays the part of -Timberlake, the dashing seaman sea-man who made swift love to Peggy I O'Neal, and Franchot Tone por-j por-j trays Eaton, the suave secretary of I war. Tuesday and Wednesday .Gearge Raft and Dolores Cos-tello Cos-tello Barrymore are co-starred in "Yours for the Asking," comedy-romance comedy-romance of a ganVbler who decides ' to learn the ways of society, com-j com-j ing to the Firmage theatre Tues-' Tues-' day and Wednesday. In the cast j are Ida Lupino, Reginald Owen, ! James Gleason, Rich "Skeets" Gal-j Gal-j lagher and others. Raft, a gamb-i gamb-i ling man, meets Miss Barrymore, a I society girl, decides to make his place "an upper-crust layout," and gets her assistance. The henchmen begin to fear that their boss is falling fall-ing for Miss Barrymore. To prevent pre-vent such an eventuality, they arrange ar-range to have Ida Lupino, beautiful beauti-ful adventuress, try to win him. She succeeds for a-time; so well that Raft, who believes her a member mem-ber of the Four Hundred, begins taking Emily Post lessons from Miss Barrymore. Comedy situations situa-tions are built up by the three aides, Miss Lupino, and a wander-j wander-j ing salesman in ten-cent gadgets, Owen, who poses as Miss Lupino's aristocratic uncle. Chapter 11 of j "Ace Drummond" and a colored cartoon will also be shown. Thursday "The Calling of Dan -Matthews," Columbia's picturization of the famous novel by Harold Bell Wright, conies to the Firmage theatre Thursday only. The story is about a modern crusader who runs into plenty of excitement when he attempts to clean up vice in a small town. The cast includes Charlotte Wynters, Douglass Dum-brille, Dum-brille, Donald Cook and Mary Kornman. Short subjects will also be shown. |
