Show FIRMAGE THEATRE Friday and Saturday ' "Crime and Punishment," which has been hailed as one of the most stirring photoplays in recent years, comes to the Firmage theatre Friday and Saturday. The Columbia Colum-bia production stars Edward Arnold, Ar-nold, of "Diamonh Jim" fame, and prominently features Peter Lorre, the celebrated Continental star. The film, based on Dostoievsky's immortal novel, tells the story of Raskolnikov, a brilliant student who turns murderer, and how he matches wits with Inspector Por-firy, Por-firy, who suspects him of the crime and yet has no material proof. Marian Marsh, Robert Allen, Al-len, Tala Birell, Douglass Dum-brille Dum-brille and others are included in the cast. There will be a Mickey Mouse cartoon and also a comedy shown. Sunday and Monday Four outstanding stars glitter in the film firmament at the Firmage Fir-mage theatre where the new Met-ro-Goldwyn-Mayer hit, "Libeled Lady," will be shown Sunday and Monday. Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy unite their exceptional acting act-ing ability in one of the most entertaining films of recent years, a drama with a newspaper angle that is as eye-catching and modern as the current headlines of the front page. The action of the piece center about a society girl who considers that a newspaper has treated her with irreverence and files a damage suit for five million dollars. Needless to say, the sued newspaper is thrown into an uproar up-roar and its managing editor solicits so-licits the aid of a former star reporter re-porter to extricate the paper from its difficulties. In his scheme to make the heiress drop her suit the reporter succeeds in making her fall in love with him. It is when he, in turn, falls in love with her that complications begin and the tale takes an unexpected and hilarious hilar-ious turn. There will also be a colored cartoon and a movietone news shown. Simone Simon, brilliant eoniinen-! eoniinen-! tal star, makes her American de-1 de-1 but as the lovely young girl trap-j trap-j ped by an emotion she does not ' understand. Herbert Marshall and ; Ruth Chatterton are starred with ! Simone, and the cast also features j Constance Collier, J. Edward Brom-berg, Brom-berg, Dixie Dunbar, John Qualen nd Shirley Deane. The story of this picture is concerned with an exclusive finishing school attended only by the daughters of the very rich. In this school, the girls are taught everything except that which the rules forbid life. The film, is a dramatic, realistic portrayal por-trayal of a young girl's first love. Eager to live, yet half-afraid Simone Si-mone at first whispers of her love only to her heart but later, like a woman, she fights for the happiness happi-ness than only love can bring. A comedy and also chapter two of "Jungle Jim" will be shown. Thursday Since conterfeiting has assumed the proportions of a national menace, men-ace, the veiled activities of the department de-partment of justice agents of the U. S. treasury have come spectacularly specta-cularly to the fore. Their intrepid operations in law enforcement have now been vividly dramatized in a Columbia production entitled, "Counterfeit", which conies to the Firmage theatre Thursday only. Featured in the imposing cast are Chester Morris, Margot Grahame, Lloyd Nolan and Marian Marsh. Briefly, the story relates the adventures ad-ventures of T-nian Chester Morris, who gains entry into the counterfeiting counter-feiting ring headed by Nolan and his sweetheart, Margot Grhanie, posing as a ruthless killer. His assignment is complicated when lie falls in love with Miss Marsh, M argot's screen sister, who has been innocently involved in their activities. Selected short subjects will also he shown. |
