Show Court Testimony In New York city in 1741, the uncorroborated un-corroborated testimony of any white woman, irrespective of her character charac-ter or motive, was sufficient to convict con-vict a Negro, according to Collier's Weekly. A thief named Mary Burton, Bur-ton, alias Margaret Kelly, in order to secure her release from prison, maliciously accused 105 innocent Negroes of an imaginary criminal plot. The result was that 71 were transported, 20 were hanged and 14 were burned at the stake. |
