Show gNAUGH ' . Los Angeles, June 25, 1938 Livestock markets generally have held up well during- the early summer, although prices are well below a year ago on all grades and classes. Due to rather unsatisfactory un-satisfactory climatic conditions, the California grass cattle deal has resulted in fewer strictly fat grass cattle than had been anticipated. antici-pated. As a result, a good many young animals are being carriea over, a factor which will tend to reduce replacement .buying next fall. Cattlemen have marketed their grass cattle over a longer than normal period, with the result re-sult that values have been pretty well maintained. There is a wide price range on steers, due to the scaricity of good to choice, grain-fed cattle. During the last week, choice long-fed steers scored a top of $10 at Los Angeles, with other fed steers at $8.50 to $9.60. Short-fed and half-fed half-fed steers which have had some concentrate, feeds are seljing at $7.50 to $8.25. The general run of grass steers have been going on the Los Angeles market at $6.50 to $7.50, although strictly fat, f irm grass steers are considered quotable quot-able up to $8.00. Feedlots are rapidly being filleu in most sections of the state. Quotations on concentrates are relatively low, permitting good profits so far this summer to those who have had feedlot cattle to market. Thousands of steers are going into feedlots now, with prices mostly at $6.25 to $6.75 for desirable, thin and half-fat steers of good feeding qualities. Best grain-fed hogs continue to sell upward to $10 a cwt., a price that is netting feeders very satisfactory satis-factory returns in feed consumed. A period of light receipts is looked forward to on all markets through July and August. Pork is going into immediate retail meat channels, chan-nels, and government reports indi-uate indi-uate the smallest volume of porK products in storage in several years. Should presenjt) improvement improve-ment in business conditions continue, con-tinue, there is ever reason to look forward to a period of profitable returns on hogs for a long time to come. California's big crop of early lambs is now pretty well out of the way and the Pacific coast lamb markets may be expected to show some improvement as buyers must seek supplies from greater distances. dis-tances. Choice lambs are selling on the Los Angeles market up to $S a cwt. Most unsatisfactory phase ot the livestock situation just now is the poor outlet for hides, bones, tallow, wool and pelts. A change for the better in by-product prices might easily come with better general business conditions and accompanying improvement in consumer con-sumer buying power. o All But "Ah, old fellow," said a man meeting a friend in the street, "so you are married at last. Allow me to congratulate you, for I hear you have an excellent and accomplished wife." "I have, indeed," was the reply. "Why, she's perfectly at home in literature, at home in music, at home in art, at home in science in short, she's at home everywhere except " "Except what?" "Except at home." Tit-Bits Mag-tzine. |
