Show I " Work Is Begun On long Range' Flood Diversion i With the ditch and dyke south ' of the Telluride Power company j sub-station completed last week, jwhat may be considered as a i "short range" flood-prevention j project has been completed, and operations began the first of the week on a "long range" project which should keep flood waters entirely clear of the town. Work on the ditch and dyke began be-gan some three weeks ago under the direction of G. A Peterman, Union Pacific drag-line opeerator from Los Angeles, with the railroad rail-road company furnishing the drag line, operators and fuel as the result re-sult of efforts put forth by the Milford Lions club to secure the cooperation of the railroad company com-pany in a comprehenvive flood prevention pre-vention program. Periodically in the past, Milford's Main street and some residence property, including in-cluding Railroad row, have been inundated with water, mud and debris, and it was felt that some concrete action should be taken. While most of the floods in the, past have not had serious consequences, conse-quences, there is no way of tell-nig tell-nig when a combination of floods might bring disaster to town and railroad property. A letter to President William M. Jeffers of the Union Pacific system, sys-tem, now United States "rubber czar," brought a promise that cooperation co-operation would be forthcoming and further interest on the part of E. J. Connors, vice president in charge of operations, and R. . F. Racine, district engineer, has brought the project along in nice shape. While the cooperation of the company has been everything to be desired, it is earnestly hoped that men and equipment will Be permitted to stay on the job until the present "long range" project west of town is completed. Following closely on Mr. Jeffers' Jef-fers' reply to the Lions club, Mr. Racine came to Milford and made an inspection of the whole setup. Following two trips to Milford, he sent his assistant engineer, C. A. Cook, here and the latter, with O. W. Chapman, surveyed and set stakes for a dyke, ditch and cut, about a mile in length, that will divert flood waters out of Big wash, some two miles west of town, and empty into a large shallow shal-low natural basin northeast of the airways radio station. A most creditable piece of work has been done by Mr. Peterman and his mechanic, Vic Myers of iMinersville, on the ditch and dyke south of town and all who have observed his work are confident of an equally good job on the larger project, should he be given time to complete it properly. |
