Show Civic Club Officers J Are Reelected for the Coming Year i i Meeting in Monroe Saturday afternoon in the high school audi- torium, directors cf the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah gave their present officers a vote of confidence by reelecting them to serve another year. The election took place following the regular monthly business session which is open to all members of the association asso-ciation and visitors. President James M. Sargent of Panguitch was named to retain his present office, as were L. A. Wy-naught Wy-naught of Milford, and Henry H. Jones of Helper, first and second vice presidents, respectively. Reid H. Gardner of Cedar City, Frank G. Martines of Richfield, and Russell Rus-sell Hawkins of Nephi, also were reelected to the executive board and Thomas W. Jensen of Mt. Pleasant was added to take the place of George H. Hunt of Bick-nell. Bick-nell. C. W. Love jr. of St. George was a member of the executive board last year in his capacity of immediate past president. At the business session the directors di-rectors voted to contact the state road commission and determine the reason for the delay in letting contracts con-tracts on the Salina canyon road, and the section of U. S. No. 91, between Cove Fort and Beaver, known as Wild Cat canyon. The Salina canyon road was supposed, according to a statement of the road commissioners, to be let in two sections on October 1 and November No-vember 1. Wildcat, canyon was to be let about the same time, directors direc-tors said. Mr. Wynaught, chairman of the association's road committee, said the delay in the first section of the Salina canyon project was. understandable, under-standable, even though the project was approved for 1938 funds, but that some action should be expected expect-ed on the second project. President Sargent, was instructed instruct-ed to write to the road commission commis-sion to determine the cause for the delay, and to urge immediate action. To correct erroneous reports that the Associated Civic clubs is sponsoring the rerouting of U. S. No. 6, known as the Roosevelt highway, fr which the assccia!ion worked three years ago, a motion was adopted stating that the association as-sociation is still in favor of the present routing and has no intention inten-tion of changing its present attitude. atti-tude. Reports had been circulated that a change was contemplated from Green River to Hanksville, Loa, Sigurd, Cove Fort, Black Rock and Ely, Nevada. j A permanent committee of Frank : G. Martines of Richfield, Guy At- : wood of Marysvale and Henry H. j Jones of Helper was appointed to promote the alunite industry in Piute county. Previously the association as-sociation had urged the reconstruction reconstruc-tion finance corporation to make a loan to a company interested in developing the area and product but this was turned down. The j committee was asked to investigate investi-gate to determine the exact cause j of the refusal of the loan. It was i suggested that the pressure of the large aluminum interests was more (Continued on last page) ' Civic Clubs Reelect (Continued from first page) to blame than the lack of liquid assets of the interested parties. Another project that is to receive re-ceive attention of the association it that of improving the roads between be-tween Beaver and Junction and the development of the area for recreational purposes. On the project submitted a month ago to assist in getting a new building in Price to house federal offices, Richfield also asked ask-ed for cooperation in getting n addition to its federal building and theassociation will vote on the merits of the project at its Decem-her Decem-her meeting. Concerning the fit od condition that has existed at Redmond for several years, it was reported by Mr. Martines that the project had been given preference by the government gov-ernment bureau and that engineers will go over the situation in the near future preliminary to starting start-ing actual work. For several years homes in Redmond have been flooded during high water due to the Sevier river being full of sand and silt near the town. It will be necessary to rebuild two or 'three dams in the vicinity and dredge the river. Fcr the purpose of promoting use of Utah products, the directors of the association will consider during the next 30 days the idea of asking the next state legislature legisla-ture to pass a "preferential bill" giving Utah manufactured or produced pro-duced products a ten or five per cent advantage over out-of-state materials when purchased by the state or its political subdivisions. A vote wll be taken on the matter at the December meeting. Already the association is on record as sponsoring a bill that will give the state aeronautics commission authority to spend its funds "in the promotion of aeronautics aero-nautics and .the improvement of .airports in the state" in any way that it deems best instead of spending the funds on the airports air-ports from which the funds are derived de-rived as at present. The aeronautics aeronau-tics commission obtains its funds from a tax on gasoline for airplane air-plane use. The group also voted to support the request of Juab county members mem-bers that the road leading to the Mount Nebo scenic and recreation area be oiled for a distance of six miles from highway 189. Sanpete county asked for assistance assist-ance in obtaining new buildings and other improvements for Snow college at Ephraim. The directors will vote on the request at the next meeting. W. S. Henderson, chairman of the "On-to-Vernal" committee of the Vernal Lions club, invited all southern Utah Lions to attend the convention next year in that city for Utah and Idaho' Lions. He ' outlined the plans for the convention conven-tion and told of the entertainment plans which included trips to the high mountain lakes, the dinosaur national monument and other features. fea-tures. Saturday night a banyuet was served in the city hall and after that a dance concluded the program. pro-gram. At the banquet Mayor C. A. White, Stanley J. Stephenson, executive secretary of the Utah Manufacturers' association, and President Sargent gave short talks. The next meeting of the association associa-tion will be in St. George, probably prob-ably on December 17. |
