Show MILFORD AIRPORT ENTERED IN SAFETY CONTEST The Airport Manager of the Milford Mil-ford Airport has been invited by the Special Committee on Awards of the National Aeronautic Association Associ-ation to qualify the landing field for the Safe Operations Certificate of the N. A. A. Air Safety Division, it was announced this week in Washington by the divisional vice president, Jerry Lederer. The attempt to encourage proper ground safety practices on airports throughout the United States is a first step in a concerted drive by 17 national organizations and government gov-ernment agencies, cooperating with the N. A. A. Air Safety Division, to cut down the accident rate in private flying. To qualify for a certificate of safe practice, the airport must operate op-erate throughout 1946 without a single serious or fatal accident and must conform to a series of mini-1 mum standards devised by an advisory ad-visory council of the 17 organizations organiza-tions and agencies. Awards of the certificates will be made on December 17 in conjunction conjunc-tion with a nation-wide series of dinners commemorating the forty-third forty-third anniversary of aviation. The second phase of the NAA safety campaign, beginning in the spring, will comprise a series of monthly educational drives, each directed at one phase of the safety problem, such as reckless flying, collision hazards, adequate flight planning for cross-country hops, accident prevention on the ground, and the like. Explaining the purpose of the drive, Mr. Lederer .asserted: "Dire predictions have been made regarding re-garding the future safety of private pri-vate aviation. The record of the past partially supports this viewpoint, view-point, for the death rate in private flying n 1941 was greater than that of automobile travel. Now that normal private flight is again possible, pos-sible, we have a chance to reverse the trend before it gets too far. "Believing that an intelligent and active interest on the part of the airport manager or operator can eliminate the causes of a substan-j substan-j tial proportion of aircraft acci-I acci-I dents, we are beginning our cam-I cam-I paign, so to speak, on the ground." |
