Show Name Eire Is Old Eire, the name of Ireland, was applied to the Emerald isle 2,000 years ago. It is pronounced "Air-a" with the accent on the "air." Ireland Ire-land is not quite as large as the state of Maine. Its greatest length is 306 miles. The island's outline is an irregular oval, not unlike the knotty potato which has been christened chris-tened "Irish." The potato has been Ireland's adopted child, since Walter Wal-ter Raleigh, then a young English governor, experimented with American Amer-ican plants in his garden at Youg-hal, Youg-hal, County Cork, where the first potatoes were grown in Ireland. |
