FIFTH GRADE After completing the study on Texas the fifth grade submitted the following information: Texas, the largest state in the United States, was annexed to the United States under peculiar circumstances cir-cumstances in the year of 1845. Texas itself was first explored by the Spanish in 1528, yet it was more than 50 years later that the first European settlement was made and still many years later before be-fore the missions were founded by the Spanish at San Antonio. In the summer of 1730 Indians began war on both the French and the Spanish. Although numerous lives were lost, it did very little damage to either party. Then the United States became interested in Texas, which at that time was a Spanish province. Numerous citizens of the United States migrated to this vast territory. ter-ritory. It was shortly after this that Mexico revolted against the (Spanish (Span-ish rule and the Texans as we will now call the immigrants from the United States assisted eagerly eager-ly in this war. Mexico was successful. suc-cessful. The Texans soon grew tired of the Mexican government and soon revolted against Mexico. Though Mexico never acknowledged their victory, the Texans set up a government of their own. The Texan government was not very successful and the country was soon far in debt. After numerous debates in congress con-gress for and against the annexation, annexa-tion, Texas was admitted to the union in the year of 1845. In 1S61 Texas succeeded from the union to join the confederacy, and soon contributed its vast resources, re-sources, and men to causes of slavery. In 18fi5 Texas, under the direction direc-tion of President Johnson, formed a new government. Congress, however, failed to recognize the new government and-placed and-placed Texas under military rule, but in March of 1870 Texas again was admittted to the union. Since that time Texas has grown in both wealth and population and is still growing in both. Betty I May Slack. |
