Show With the Colors From A C Vernon Beard, Santa lAia, California J :Santa Ana Army Air Base, California, Cali-fornia, November 17, 1942. Dear Mr. Williams: Just a line tonight from AC Beard. Yes, the 28th of November Novem-ber will mark the seventh day of quarantine, psycho-analysis, psycho-motor tests, physical examinations examina-tions and army routine. I Arriving in Santa Ana before other members of my group, I was made a member of Squadron 17, composed of Texans and Okla-homans, Okla-homans, with a few lone wolves from scattered western and southern sou-thern states. For two weeks, cadets at Santa Ana are processed for classification as pilot, navigator navigat-or or bombardier. The cadets who successfully pass as "human guinea pigs" for a fine corps of air men will receive from six to seven weeks preflight training here at Santa Ana before beginning begin-ning their primary training. As you will realize, the regularity regulari-ty and order found in the air corps is a change for me. Today I weighed in at 152 pounds, stripped a gain of nearly a pound a day. Therefore, you wall know that we eat good, well-balanced, plentiful food. Santa Ana has grown considerably consid-erably since Hanney (Tom) and Lewis (Dave) were here. We have over 20,000 men actually sta-tioned sta-tioned at this base and we are still growing. j I will write Bud a letter soon i but you' might give him my address. ad-dress. And so, with a firm love for the air corps of the United j States army, I will close this short j note and will write again. VERNON AC Vernon Beard, Squadron 17, Flight A, Santa Ana, California.
