Show Cemetery Planted As One Activity On Labor Day Though not given as general an observance as was desired, Arbor day in Milford, observed last Monday, Mon-day, marked another milestone in the movement for a New Milford Beautiful. Addition of trees and shrubs about the homes of the community got off to a good start Monday and is being continued with several shipments arriving daily from various nurseries besides utilization uti-lization of elms, lilacs and spirea purchased through cooperation of town board and schools, with a number of elms and some other shrubs still available, according to Principal E. R. Moody of the high school. W. B. Gardner, as town trustee-committeeman, trustee-committeeman, who, in conjunction conjunc-tion with.L. H. Parsons and J. M. Hughes, representing the high school, has had much to do with getting the planting work going, recruited a number of townsmen Monday morning, most of them railroad men, and put in a big day at the cemetery, cleaning up and then planting lilac and spirea all along one side of the area. Mr. Gardner, speaking modestly of what had been done but not so modestly of what he wants to take a hand in doing in the future said that not a man he approached that morning relative to going up and helping, turned him dow-n nor did a single one fail to show up. Which speaks well for them and for the high regard in which Mr. Gardner is held by his fellows. Under the direction of the schools replacements were made of most of the elms which had been lost from the planting of a year ago, most f which lived and did well where given any care and attentions atten-tions from property owners or oc-u oc-u pants. In connection with this, The News would add that J. Whitney Floyd, extension forester connected connect-ed with the Agricultural college at Logan, impressed on us the necessity neces-sity of proper pruning of last year's planting of elm trees. If these trees are to attain proper shape and growth for street and avenue planting they must be pruned without loss of time. |
