Are Distributed Nearly 10,000,000 pounds of 20 varieties of foodstuffs, in addition to thousands of pieces of bedding and wearing apparel, have ' been j distributed to the needy of Utah i by the federal surplus relief cor-j cor-j poration through the state relief ' organization since October 10, 1933, it is shown in a report re-I re-I leased August 9 by Glen D. Reese, Utah director of surplus commodities. commod-ities. Mr. Reese explained the methods meth-ods used by the corporation and I said its general policy was to pur-! pur-! chase and distribute basic and essential es-sential commodities. He estimat-! estimat-! ed the total value of the commod-I commod-I ities, based on Salt Lake City j wholesale prices, at $1,663,979 and j fixed the cost of distribution from railroads or istorago places to I needy persons at 7.34 per cent of j the wholesale value. Foodstuffs distributed to relief clients in all parts of the state, in pounds, follow: Fresh meats, 2,-327,350; 2,-327,350; fresh apples, 390,000; dried beans, 70,000; canned beef, mutton and veal, 1,507,954; butter, 431,230; cereals, 124,224; cheese, 112,901; flour, 841,232; lard, 106,110; evaporated milk, 243,023; dried milk, 64,234; salt pork, 721,-580; 721,-580; smoked pork, 1,210,275: rice, 199,395; sugar 60,000; canned soup, 53,435; canned fruits and vegetables, 123,494; f rei b and dried vegetables, 487,217; egg-s, 130,620 dozen. In addition 330,-487 330,-487 pounds of blue grass seed were distributed. The commodity director pointed out that all of the flour, a large amount of the lard, evaporated and dried milk, smoked mnat, and sugar was processed in Utah plants and all of the eggs were purchased in Utah. Other surplus commodities distributed distri-buted included: 10,322 mattresses, 12,610 wool blankets 24,208 comforters, com-forters, 52,624 pillow cases, 23,233 bed sheets, 103,642 towels and 37-886 37-886 pieces of wearing apparel. Mr. Reese explained that distribution distri-bution of the commodities in no way curtailed other relief activities activi-ties so far as funds were available. avail-able. o |
