Appeals are going out from southern California meat packers for additional numbers of skilled '"boners", the men who process pro-cess canner and cutter beef for the armed services. A review of the week shows that 12 major markets received 201,000 cattle against 170,000 a year ago. 33,000 calves against 23,000 a year ago, 607,000 hogs against 350.000 j (Continued on last pnge) LIVESTOCK NOTES (Continued trom first page! a year ago, and 220,000 sheep and lambs against 209,000 a year1 ago. Thus for the second month this year, livestock slaughter is being maintained far in excess of previous pre-vious all-time records. At the Los Angeles Union Stock ' yards, broad demand prevails for all grades and classes of cattle. Choice Arizona-fed steers again reached $16 a cwt. and members of the trade are of the opinion that strictly choice to prime, high-yielding high-yielding steers would be quotable to $17 if available. Medium to good fed steers cleared at $14.50 to $15.75, common to medium steers $12 to $14.25. Good to choice fed heifers are selling at $14 to $15.25, common and medium grades $11 to $13.50. Medium to good beef cows made I $11.25 to $12.75 and a few good j cows sold as high as $13.50. Fleshy dairy cows brought up- wards to $12 a cwt. Cutter to j common cows cleared at $9.75 to .$11, canners and cutters $7 to $9.50, medium to good bulls mostly $10.25 to $12.35. Good to choice native vealers are scarce at $14 to $15.50, slaughter calves mostly $12 to $14.50, common grades on down to $9.25. Medium to good stocker and feeder steers moved out at $11.50 to $12.50, a few yearlings made $13; stock cows mostly $7.50 to $fc.75, good to choice Btock calves $13.25 to $14.50. T |
