Show N the Alumni column of this issue UN IDIN n there is given an account of proceedings Proceedings proceedings pro Pro- that should interest all connected connected connected con con- with the University The Alumni have taken up the matter of free scholarships scholarships scholarships scholar scholar- ships which the University has sadly needed in the past For the present they are making the attempt to establish but one others may follow later All know th the great need there is here for scholarships Many of the students are putting themselves through school many are planning to do so To these a scholarship would mean much The Alumni Association has done well in attempting to aid such students They could have chosen no more fitting sign of their former presence presence among us or of bf their present interest in our welfare re This action of the Alumni Asso i- i is co coincident with the action taken takena a few days ago by the Board of Regents when they voted three scholarships in inthe inthe inthe the University for the education of the worthy Cuban youth The Alumni Association Association Association As As- gives one the Regents three but whether more re real l benefit to our school and state and even to humanity will not result from froni the giving of that one scholarship to an eager half starved Utah brain is a question We are saying nothing against the education of the Cubans On the contrary the more quickly American free schools and American American American Am Am- principles are firmly established upon the West Indies the better will it be for them and our nation However it is the common school they want first Doubtless there are some Cubans in need of so called higher education but there are many wealthy eastern colleges that can supply the demand To us the demand for scholarships comes more pressingly from our own counties The three scholarships that the Board of Regents had at is disposal could we think have been used to far greater benefit here at home When we consider the scarcity of educational in institutions institutions institutions in- in in our State and the difficulty some of its sons and d daughters find in getting an education we cannot help but feel that this action of the Board is in ina in ina a meas measure re robbing our own children of their right birth-right to give it to a stranger z |
