E Little has given fifteen dollars for the purchase of books for forthe forthe forthe the library This is the third annual contribution of this kind from Mrs Little and her generosity is much appreciated by the University t Mrs Cora H. M Ridges occupied the remainder of the time in reviewing the Aftermath JJ They all walked in a great long row Those legislative Their looks were grave their walk was slow Their marching though pretty good Ill I'll allow Showed plainly that Miss Babcock didn't teach them how But theres there's not one but gave a graceful bow Those legislative Now is all right I hope Said those But weve we've only got ten days to vote Said those And for you to bring us all up here hereOn here On the muddiest night of all the year Its It's only a waste of time I fear Said the legislative n. n The University has c certainly enjoyed very few visits from a more pleasing and distinguished artist than Miss Katherine 1 Oliver elocutionist and Scotch Imper Imper- Last Friday the College Elocution Elocution Elocution Elo Elo- cution Class after receiving some valuable valuable valuable able suggestions from the lady opened their door to the throng of students who filled the room to the utmost Miss Oliver was kind enough to recite A Doctor of the Old School from Ian Maclaren's Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush and with her pleasing easy and perfect art com completely enraptured the students If possible she will make a longer stay on her return trip and more of the students will have the privilege privilege privilege lege of hearing one of the few great readers We Weare are also somewhat proud to observe observe observe ob ob- serve that she exemplifies our own Prof Babcock's Babcok's excellent teaching This should receive the serious consideration of every student who if not at present will soon realize that Elocution is cerI certainly certainly one of the most necessary and re refining refining refining re- re I fining studies taught in our school Some of the members of the Legislature Legisla Legisla- ture paid the University a a. very pleasant visit Monday morning from eight to ten The first stop top was made at the laboratory building where the visitors inspected the machine shops in the basement attended the class dass in Physics held on the first floor and inhaled the vapors of the chemical laboratories up stairs From here the visitors went to the West Building Chapel was in session so the Legislators were present at the morning services After looking through the rest of this buil building ling an adjournment adjourn adjourn- ment was made to the Main Building The students collected in the art room on the top floor were called called to together together together to- to gether by Dr Kingsbury who then in introduced introduced introduced in- in Senator Rideout The senator spoke briefly of the love and interest he bore toward our Alma Mater and detailed detailed detailed de de- tailed the possibilities in store for her We should all strive to make the trie U University University Uni Uni- ni- ni of Utah not third or fourth in rank but first Representative Murdock was Yas next in in- Himself a pioneer he spoke of the early band that came to this valley valley valley val val- Y ley and of their love of education that made this University possible Following him came Representative Tanner He spoke concisely of the value of education and of the opportunities ties the students here enjoy The next next visitor to speak was Parry who brought greetings to us from the Southern Branch Normal School Dr Kingsbury then introduced an old student of the U. U of U. U Represent Representative tive Welsh Mr Welsh contrasted the school at the present time with it at the time he graduated The last speaker was Representative Crosby M MD D. D who made a very witty speech much appreciated by the students In his speech he emphasized the necessity necessity necessity sity for the practical side of education Their visit enjoyable alike to legislators legislators legislators legis legis- and students closed with rousing cheers given by the students for University University University Uni Uni- and Legislature |
