Show FARM NOTES BY GOLDEN L. STOKER Beaver County Agent D. H. I. Program Shows Growth On Utah Farms Dairy herd improvement work now covers nine counties of the state, with 171 separate herds on test, including 2320 cows, according accord-ing to Lyman H. Rich, U. S. A.C. entension dairyman. For the past several years dairy herd improvement improve-ment work has been carried on in three counties of the state, with approximately 400 cows on test, but interest has so increased this . year that three new associations vhave been organized in Cache, Box E' 'v, Weber, Davis, Morgan and Tooele counties, Mr. Rich reports. The dairy herd improvement association as-sociation is comprised of dairymen who cooperate in employing a. trained man to visit their farms each month, weigh and test the milk as well as figure the feed costs and profits and assist with herd management. The four dairy herd improvement improve-ment supervisors now employed are Del Gay, working in Utah, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties; coun-ties; Antony Colletti, covering Weber, Box Elder, Davis and Morgan Mor-gan counties; Junius Bair and Orson Or-son Pcrkes have two associations in Cache county. "The dairy herd improvement program gives the farmer definite information so that he can efficiently effi-ciently cull out low producers and make possible the selection , of cows for replacement purposes,'' heifers from the highest producing Mr. Rich explained. "Probably the greatest value comes from the evaluation of the dairy sire." Records are compiled on all of " the daughters of the herd bull and compared with records of their dams. This makes it possible to lengthen the life and useful service ser-vice of the outstanding sires of the state. Testing work is also being done in some of the southern counties nf the state in cooperation with the county agents and creameries. This work, of course, is private but definitely beneficial. The Weber Central dairy, for example, has approximately ap-proximately 500 cows on test through their cooperative organization. organi-zation. Any dairyman desiring to cooperate co-operate in dairy herd improvement work should contact his county agent. |
