Show Roosevelt Is Given Smaller Majority; G.O.P.ElectsThree Beaver county remained in the Democratic column in Tuesday's general election, so far as the heads of the tickets were concerned, concern-ed, but by greatly reduced majorities, majori-ties, when compared with figures of 1936. When it came to county officers, however, the Republicans reelected Clif McShane of Beaver as representative to the state legislature, leg-islature, Ernest G. Joseph of Beaver Bea-ver to the four-year commission-ership, commission-ership, and George C. Miller of Beaver to be county attorney. All these Republican victories in the county were by substantial majorities, major-ities, the single county office going go-ing Democratic being the two-year commissionership, which went to Truman Bradfield of MinersvilDe" by a majority of six votes. An odd coincidence in connection connec-tion with the Minersville commissionership commis-sionership ;s the fact that, though the only consistently strong Republican Re-publican precinct in the county, it has had Democratic commissioners commis-sioners since 1934. Beaver county gave Franklin D. Roosevelt a majority of 424 for president in 1936 but this year his majority is reduced more than half (to 202) over Wendell L. Willkie. Congressman Abe Murdock of Beaver, running for United States senator, won the election by big odds over Philo T. Farnsworth jr., apparently outdistancing President Presi-dent Roosevelt by several thousand thou-sand votes in the state. But in Beaver county his majority of 559 votes for 1940 is only a little more than half the majorities of 971 he ran up in 1936 and 934 in 1938. In the race for district judge, Durham Morris of Cedar City made a remarkable race in Beaver county, only 20 votes behind the incumbent judge, Will L Hoyt ofj Nephi. Iron county gave Morris! 933 votes the better of it, but this I didn't loom up very large against! Juab's majority of some 1500 j votes for Hoyt, not to take into consideration Washington county, which went for the incumbent, and Millard, the figures for which J county are not available. Ernest G. Joseph of Beaver, in-1 cumbent chairman of the board of county commissioners, who made a strong race against H. A. Christiansen Chris-tiansen for the two-year term two years ago, increased his majority more than 100 votes this year to win over Mark Woolsey by 470 majority. Clif McShane had a majority ma-jority of 144 over John P. Barton two year ago and 145 over Samuel Sam-uel O. White this year. The propoaed constitutional amendment, whereby the constitutional constitu-tional provision for double liability liabil-ity of stockholders in failing Utah state banks would ibe removed, remov-ed, was given a 619 to 165 endorsement en-dorsement in Bieaver county and carried throughout the state by an equally impressive majority. A summarization of votes cst in Tuesday's election shows the Milford vote to be 72 larger than two years ago while Beaver cast only three miore votes than in the year 1938. ' wt |
