Show Pineapple of American Birth The exotic pineapple is of American Ameri-can birth. Wild pineapples, growing grow-ing in highland forests of interior Brazil and Paraguay, resemble the ancestors of the. cultivated fruit a fist-like three-inch "apple," full of black seeds and topped by a tuft of grassy spears of leaf. Several centuries cen-turies of domesticated life have improved im-proved the species to a size approaching ap-proaching 12 pounds in weight and to a state of complete seedlessness. New plants are started from slips of old ones. Air plants, such as the Spanish moss festooning with dolorous dol-orous gray the trees of Florida and Louisiana, are cousins to the pineapple. |
