Show LIVESTOCK K0TE5 Lcs Angeles, September 9, 1135 Ju.-t returned from a visit to I ha State Fair at Sacramento where I met many of our Western Wes-tern exhibitors. This was by far : Ire biggest and best livestock ex-j ex-j liibi'ion I have ever seen at the j 'I'.v.'i fair. I ;n the ij'-cf line, of fat yearling ; Ii ret'on's, averaging 1220 pounds, 'h'i'.vG.l creditable quality and fin- . ish, showing what can be done by ; ood breeding and feeding, bearing bear-ing in mind that the best always sells first on the market. There : isn't any too much of this class of j j beet. 1 I The Shorthorn division was well j represented, likewise the Aber- j deen-Angus breed. All in all it1 i va- a highly creditable show, and ! it was pleasing to see competition' from other states. The location, : of the State fair at Sacramento) ' makes it easily possible for the; several other western states to ex-, ex-, hi bit their flocks and herds. 1 Was sorry not to have had the chance to see all the exhibitors, i but all that I talked to are looking! forward to being at our stock show, November 16 to 23, where most of the best will be in evidence evi-dence and where final awards will be made with the best judging talent tal-ent that can be had. We are getting our premium list ready which wil j be out around the loth of this month. The dairy division wes a big show with entries from several states. The Holsteins predominated predominat-ed but the Guernseys ' and Jer-j Jer-j seys were not far behind, in num-j num-j bers this year. The Ayrshire exhibit ex-hibit is the biggest I have ever I seen at any of our fairs with strong representation also for the milking Shorthorns. California is having a revival 'of interest shown at the county and district fairs based on the fact! Vhat they have some money to j spend by reason of pari mutuel j betting on horse racing which j would not be possible without this source of ineomej and I know of no better way to spend our money than to help our agricultural and livestock structure. The money derived from the same source has also helped the Future Farmers and 4-H club members considerably. consider-ably. In connection with the Junior activities, the stock show management manage-ment has made a new arrange-mient arrange-mient with the Future) Farmers. Heretofore the public speaking contest has been confined to the subject of livestock. This year it is thrown open to all agricultural subjects. With this substantial broadening of the field, I am sure there will be a much greater interest in-terest in the contest. Governor Merriam made a very practical statement at the fair about the young folks who are g'etting their lesson in agriculture agricul-ture through the state university and state department of education educa-tion when he said: "It didn't matter mat-ter so much what the older men had done in the past as it did what these younger folks are going to do in the future." |
