Show 'Rack-Biting' Apparently' Deserve According to articles appearing in recent issues of the l'oaver Press and supposedly eniannliinv from Heaver county headquarters of the civil works administration or tin emergency emer-gency re-employment service, there is considerable "hiirk iu: nig" going en witli these 01 ganiaiions us the objects of criticism. If in-tances id unfair treatment of whioh The News is painfull, aware may be taken as n criterion by which but "hack hi'.iiu-' may be judged, then we are inclined to think tlinl a l.iroe shale of It i justified and those responsible would do ell to "get net" to thellrelve- and yti a just and proper s;,i ,,11 their duties and the needs of the people peo-ple they are appointed to sei ve, thu- avng their superiors in the stale and national lelief aoemic- from futiher criticism. 1 or years and years and year-, ; cording to reliable information furnished fur-nished The News, Mdford and the western part of Heaver county have been given the short end if every -thing, Will Ike possible exception id scN ol adninist-ntiou matters, whioh j to the be t of our knowledge, hav been i .n 'noted with a view f fair , less in most resin-els. With this ex- ception, Beaver and i'cavcr ir.stitu-' turns have been shown flagrant fav-l oritism whenever her townsj-ople ; have had the -ay and they make sure of having the say by loading up every committee or other organi.'A 1 body with an overwhelming prepon-j derenoe of Be:iver tow Tl -n'e':, I' ltvin.: only small minorities to the ve-ii-.-nj ! art of the county, with the re-ult that, no matter hove alert the western1 members of surh setups may le, they no more than turn thcir barks tram gross unfairess is permitted to r.m1 riot with all bit a few of the county, capital crowd! The ItCO federal rens-.i nr.d that; is the recogniiud authority for population popu-lation figures gives the east part of the county (Beaver, Adamsville and Greenville precincts) a total population of 21.VJ. The western part of the county, compri-irg Milford and Minersville prccintfr, is listed with 2."s-l population, and this does not take into account the 100 population popu-lation credited to Gramnion precinct, supposedly the old Newhou-e section. In other words, that !.ir of Beaver county lyine west of P.ocky Ford dam has l-'2 more population than the east part of the co-.mty! But wc challenge the C. W. A., the C.C.C.. the re-employnx'nt service or other county-wide agencies to show where western Beaver county and its institutions insti-tutions have been given a consistently consistent-ly even break, much less a slight edge, as the population odds would warrant! That the county is able to operate at all is due in large r-itl to the fact that some 70rc of the paid taxes in Beaver county have come from west side properties! When it comes to real relief need the unfairness of the re-employment ' and C. W. A. services in Bcaver county coun-ty is glaringly apparent. With so many Milford people dependent on railroading and mining for a living. ! unemployment such as this commun'-i commun'-i ty is passing through, means virtual destitution for a considerable part of our people. These men und their families, with the men out of work, have no well filled cellars and plenty! of meat, milk, butler and el-'gs to fall) back to as is the case with the bigi majority of the people in other hec-1 turns of the county! In the case of. many Milfonl people, actual starvation starva-tion stares them in the face wluui I lie head of the family is out uf employment. em-ployment. But is that condition giv--' en proper recognition by the power-) thai be'.' Well, not so thai we have been aide to notice! Incidentally, the whole lelief setup, ill our opinion, wa planned largely to aid Ibis very! class of people and this opinion is lioine out by the following excerpt' fioni a loiter to Iron county authoii- tio wutten by George A. Yager, I tali diieilor of the National llt-cm-plovii.etit serviie: 'Apparently it it lour impression that farmera and stoek raisers, etc., have riitht to em-' plov men! on l .N.A. projcct. 1 hey have no right to expert employment on these project until worker ordinarily or-dinarily classed a industrial work-; rrs arc receiving full time employment." employ-ment." Gelling right down to brass tacks, the C W. A., the re-employment service ser-vice and general lelief headquarters should have been established in Mil-fotd Mil-fotd in tea I of Heaver in the fir't pluce! Here would ;ave lccn available avail-able direct rail, mail and telegraphy ic conr:-ct ioi s, all of w hich mean much in the saving of valuable time and the heading off of well-founded criticism. In Iron county these factors fac-tors were given proper consideration by the sta'e authorities in the original set-up and Cedar City was made hea ai.iarters in preference to ::.e county eat. And if the state directors really want to have this work handled at fullest efficiency in all re peots they will, even ut this late .ay, make the transfer to Milford. Mil-ford. Had this been done at the very begirt-.!: g of the work, perhaps some of tho-e in the western part of the county who have been working hard and for nothing anight have go; a crack at soa.e of the nice-sal-, ur:nl swivel-chair jobs and office per-onnel positions; at the same time a-surii:g the west side of a just share of offlre rentals and division of other 1 at ror.agc. In this connection, we'll ' wager ollr ciil overshoes that expen-d expen-d lures for these puroses, in which ' only Beaver people have thus far pariioii ated, have never been chalked up again-t Beaver's already top-1 I heavy share of county allotments. We realhe that , in the haste of I relief, as in war, there are bound to be mistakes made and more or less waste, but there is no excuse for continued injustice. It may be that we are doing someone wrong in some respect in giving vent to this criticism. criti-cism. Should this be the case and facts and figures are produced in substantiation, an apology from us will lo forthcoming and at once! This criticism is not aimed exclus-I exclus-I ively at relief agencies, however, j There are other officials who have apparently lapsed into complete for-I for-I getfulness as regards western Bea-' Bea-' ver county people and institutions as soon as elections were over but I more on this later! |
