The completion of highway Si1 r.e;-r Thistle also was included i a part of the Salina canyon project. The banquet and public meeting in the Arrowhead hotel Saturday night was attended by 150 people. John T. Woodbury, Mayor of St. George, welcomed wel-comed the visitors after being introduced intro-duced by C. W. Love jr., Washington county director, who acted as toast-master. toast-master. In response. President Frank G. Martines introduced all delegates and thanked them for the splendid! spirit of cooperation which had prevailed pre-vailed during the depression period, and asked that it be continued. He asserted that should this spirit be maintained until the next election, southern Utah would undoubtedly be represented by a state road commissioner commis-sioner during the next administration. administra-tion. State Senator George Jefferson spoke briefly on the relationship between be-tween the civic clubs and the legislature. legis-lature. He said southern L'tah representatives repre-sentatives and senators had the reputation rep-utation of casting aside party lines and working together for the benefit of the south, and that this ideal condition con-dition was highly respected by the other members of the legislative bodies. He further stated that this spirit must prevail among the 110,-000 110,-000 people and their clubs of south-em south-em Utah in order to obtain the desired de-sired results. The final speaker at the public meeting, Secretary Benjamin Cameron Cam-eron jr., Par.guitch, was introduced by President Martines as the father of the Associated Civic Clubs. Mr. Cameron reviewed the accomplishments accomplish-ments of the organization since its inception, four years ago. Amongj the more important items were the! reduction of gasoline prices, rein-' stallation of train service on the j Denver and Rio Grande system from Salt Lake to Marysvale, and numerous numer-ous road construction and improvement improve-ment projects. All of these, he said, had been put over at practically no! expenditure of funds, and with all officers and directors of the associa-1 tion working without pay or re- muneration for expenses, the secre-j tary being the only paid worker The program of entertainment and! a dance following the public meet-; ing was arranged by the St. George chamber of commerce and the Wash-! inrton county director, Mr. Love. A committee consisting of Dr. Leo Merrill, Salina, chairman; A D. Kel-J lar, Castle Dale; Roy Barlow, Junc- tion; L. A. Wynaught, Milford, and; President Martines was appointed to work temporarily, pending the selec-: tion of a permanent road committee,; on the Salina canyon and highwayj 89 project. j At the suggestion of Senator Jef-, ferson, this committee also was instructed in-structed to investigate the proposed, "scenic circle" route from San Fran-; cisco through Reno and Ely, Nevada,' Lehman's caves, Bryce and Zion notional no-tional parks, Las Vegas, Nevada, Los Angeles and return to the start- ing point. This plan was to have! been discu.ed by the governors of! the three states at Reno during De-. cember, but .the representative ap-1 pointed by the Utah governor failed to attend the meeting. Because of the expected meeting in Reno, the civic clubs had withheld action at their last meeting. Because of the rules of the association asso-ciation requiring all projects to be submitted 30 days before any action can be taken, many subjects were discussed and will be acted on later. The matter of an all-year route between be-tween Panguitch and Cedar City was tabled, and an intercounty meeting recommended, because the counties concerned had not yet agreed upon a definite route. The association will not support any plan on which member mem-ber counties are not in accord. Airports and airmail lines were discussed at length, and a committee was appointed to investigate and re-ouest re-ouest establishment of a route from Salt Lake to Kingman, Arizona. At present there is no mail service south from Fredonia, Arizona. The committee com-mittee includes J. E. Gam, Richfield; Mr. Cameron and Joseph Matsoil, Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Love, Wilson Lunt, Cedar City, and Mr. Wynaught will investigate investi-gate several minor road construction and repair jobs in Iron and Washington Washing-ton counties. Durrel Cory of Cedar will contact the state highway repair supervisor regarding the road from highway 91 to LaVerkin on the Zion Park route. This section is in dire need of repair. Gardner, forYner president presi-dent of the clubs, of Cedar City, and Mr. Cameron were instructed to continue con-tinue their work on the erection of road markers at Barstow, California; Califor-nia; Flagstaff, Arizona, and Anderson's Ander-son's ranch on highway 01. The Milford delegation, headed by j Sei.ator Jefferson, will investigate' the possibility of obtaining farm' loans through the state land board j and draw resolutions requesting favorable action, to be signed by President Martines and sent to the land board. Funds for the 1934 campaign will be solicited from the counties at the rate of l-20th of a mill, based on the assessed valuation. In the future counties will be asked to include this in their assessments. The February meeting was planned plan-ned for either Millard or Beaver ,-ounty. Delta and Fillmore will -be eiven first choice, with Beaver and Milford second. The exact date will be announced by the president. Flection of a traveling secretary, executive secretary and treasurer was held over for the February meet-ir.tr. meet-ir.tr. Delegations were enthusiastic in their praise of the successful meeting meet-ing and outlook for the year, asserting assert-ing that the interest never before has been on such a high p'.ane.
