FARM NEWS NOTES ! f i I BY LEW MAR PRICE County Agent I Safe Method Given For Dry-Cleaning Dry-cleaning may be done succesa-home succesa-home if the right kind of cleaning fully and with comparative safety at solvent is used and if correct methods meth-ods are followed, says Ellen Agren, specialist in clothing for the Utah State college extension service. Use a commercial cleaning preparation, prep-aration, generally known as dry-cleaning dry-cleaning solvent, which is semi-explosive, evaporates slowly and has a flash point of 100 degrees F. or higher. Naphtha, high test, or ordinary gasoline should never be used in home dry-cleaning because there is much danger of explosions, warns Miss Agren. A benzine soap may be used to assist as-sist in the cleaning process. Use these according to the directions on the container. The following method of procedure is outlined by Miss Agren: 1. Collect garments to be dry-cleaned; dry-cleaned; shake each garment well and mark with a basting thread spots which will need special attention; place each garment on a hanger. The light-colored clothing should be cleaned clean-ed first. 2. Place on a table, out-of-doors, in the shade, three vessels each containing con-taining from one gallon to six quarts of cleaning solvent. 3. Use plenty of solvent as much of the success of dry-cleaning depends de-pends on this. 4. Put some benzine soap into the first vessel only. Now immerse th farment into the cleaning solvent in the first vessel and rub well. Take garment out; squeeze and let drip. 5. Place garment into second vessel ves-sel of cleanng solvent; rub, rinse well rnueeze and let drip. 6. Place garment into third vessel ves-sel containing the solvent; rinse well, squeeze as dry as possible, shake garment carefully, place on a hanger hang-er in the shade until solvent evaporates. evapo-rates. The solvent in the third container should be kept clean. As the cleaning progresses put the solvent from the second container into in-to the first; from the third container into the second, and the clean solvent into the third container for the last rinse. 7. When the solvent has evapo- rated completely, the garment may be taken indoors, pressed, and hung in a warm, airy place to deodorize. Mrs. Kathileen Farnsworth, who ,'s our county recorder, will be glad to give demonstrations on this method any place in the county. ' |
