Show Timber Crop in 25 Years J A forest plantation of 324 acres started by a coke company of Scotts- I dale, Pa., from 1906 to 1912 now con- I tains many trees ready for cutting for mine props and lagging. The plantings plant-ings were made under plans furnished by the United States forest service In 1006. Large areas of red oak and smaller ones of silver maple made the best growth. Some of the twenty-five-year-old stands of oak and maple recently examined by extension foresters for-esters were found to be 50 feet high, containing trees 10 Inches in diameter, although most of the stands were 30 to 40 feet In height Except where forest fires had Invaded portions of the area, the plantings proved commercially com-mercially profitable. |
