Show COUNTY AGENT NOTES Fluke Demonstration Dr. L. E. Swanson, government veterinarian, will be in Beaver Monday, Mon-day, April 23, to hold a meeting and give a demonstration on treating the ground for control of liver fluke of fattle and sheep. While it is not generally known, it s a fact that we lose thousands of dollars each year because of flukey livers of cattle. The packers all know that Beaver county has a fluke area, and consequently buy at about $2.00 a head below the otherwise normal value. Entire flocks of farm sheep have been wiped out by this parasite until it has now become a regular practice with owners of many of these flocks to treat the sheep to kill the fluke. The treatment of the ground is even more important for the cattleman cattle-man than for the sheepman because cattle cannot be so successfully treated for the parasite; and while few deaths occur among cattle, gains made are much more expensive when the pest is present. Dr. Swanson's demonstration should be of interest to every cattle and farm sheep producer in the county since packers are reported to discriminate dis-criminate against any cattle coming from Beaver county. . Rodent Bait Here One thousand pounds of government-treated steamed rolled oats for poisoning squirrels arrived in the county during the past week. The major part of this was left at the Milford feed store, where it can be (Continued on last page) ! County Agent Notes i (Continued from first pape) secureti by anyone needing same. Ten i j bai;s were left at the Marshall store' j in Minersville for the convenience of I those who need it there, and a like supply is available in Beaver. In one 10-pound bay: there are approximately ap-proximately 10C0 squirrel baits. An article by our go eminent specialist two weeks ai;0 showed the very-heavy very-heavy expense of maintaining squirrels squir-rels in the fields. No one can afford to passively allow the squirrels to multiply in the fields when 1000 1 baits can be secured for 50 cents. Actual counts have shown as high as 100 squirrels killed per pound of bait used. If more bait is needed it can be secured se-cured within a few days. H is even more effective on the squirrels after the alfalfa gets a few inches high. o |
