To the Editor of the News: The Milford and Beaver Lions clubs are working to have the Beaver county coun-ty Commissioners appoint an inspector inspect-or of meats, fruits and vegetables. The county is in a poor condition to stand this added expense. Taxes on land in the Pumping District have already al-ready been raised to around $1.25 per acre. Few farms made enough to pay the taxes this year so the taxes re- main unpaid or the money was borrowed. bor-rowed. Taxes should not be increased at present anyway. At the present time nearly half of the farms in the Milford Valley have had the power cut off because their owners are not able to pay for last years power. When conditions are like this, it is a poor time to talk of an inspector who is to be paid $150.00 per month. It is claimed that the Inspector will prevent the use of diseased meat. This is not as necessary as where unknown parties kill an sell the meat. Our population po-pulation is so small that most of us know those who kill and sell meat. In a thinly settled country the cost of government per capita becomes so high that all the expense which is possible should be avoided. In intensely in-tensely settled section this inspection is all right but it is not needed here now. The real aim of those who are working for this inspection is to interfere inter-fere with trade and to make it harder hard-er for farmers and ranchers to sell their beef, mutton, veal and poultry direct to their neighbors. If we have to send to Beaver and have the inspector in-spector come down and tell us that we can kill a calf or a chicken before we can sell to a neighbor there will not be much sold direct. Don't you think that we should not have the inspector at this time ? If so, communicate with Fred Levi, Herb Eyre and M. Harris who are our present pre-sent County Commissioners before December 29th when it is to come up for consieration. Sincerely yours, Chester G. Haskell |
