Show WHERE SOME OF THE MONEY GOES On a recent trip through California and Arizona the writer had occasion to cross into Old Mexico at a little town called San Luis, Sonora. On the American side of the fence eight brilliantly uniformed, armed to the teeth American customs officials were housed in a building which they said cost around 80,000. It was the last word in modem office buildings. Across the border line 100 yards away two Mexican customs officers, sitting outside an adobe hut, did the same amount of work. Is it any wonder that the government last year spent over four billions of dollars when during the same period the income only amounted to slightly over two billions ? The American officials at the border admitted that they had not taken in $75 in duties in the last six mbnths. Washington County News. |
