Show AN OUTSTANDING FARM NEED. It is estimated that less than three per cent of the American farmers are on improved, year-round highways. high-ways. In many agricultural areas farmers are cut off from the rest of the world by a barrier of muddy, impassable im-passable roads, during five or more months of the year, Under such conditions agricultural prosperity and pro-, gress are impossible. Agriculture is the most basic of all industries, and should be treated as such. It is the duty of every state, to provide its fanners with efficient, hard surfaced year-round year-round roads as fast as they can be built. Long-wearing, waterproof surfaces can be constructed at a very low cost, and maintained without great expense. Trunk lines passing through farm counties have to . be laid out with the aim of following the shortest line between cities, rather than reaching the greatest possible pos-sible number of fanners. By building secondary roads into these highways farmers can be given an all-year medium of communication with the outside world. Agriculture Agri-culture must be given eve'ry opportunity to develop along with other American industries. o |
