Show - UP IN THE AIR COLUMN - It has been found by experiment that sensitive navigation instruments which depend on air pressure for operation do not give accurate readings read-ings when installed jn cabin planes. ARMY FLYING EXPENSE The cost of operating army air corpe plane ranges from 40.08 to $268.47 for every hour the plane is flown. This cost includes everything except the pay of the pilot. The cost runs according to plane and varies considerably. While the cost flying an old primary trainer with Wright E engine is $74.89 the new 'type with air cooled engine can be flown for $48.08. Pursuit ships are considerably more expensive to operate. The PI Curtis with D12 engine costs $96.76 per hour. The P. W. 9 with a D12 engine, $96.73 per hour. The P12 with P. W. wasp engine 591.90. The P6 with V1570 engine, $104.37. Observaton planes boost the running expense again, the most expensive being be-ing the Curtis 011 with a Liberty Motor which averages $110.25 per hour operating cost. The amphibians, cargo and bombardment bomb-ardment planes by nature of their additional weight naturally are the most expensive of the army corps planes to fly. The Keystone OA 2 amphibian with wright V1460 motor costs $268.47 per hour. The Ford C-4 cargo plane, $229.41 and the LB-5 bombardment plane with Liberty engine, $196.54. That is where some of Uncle Sam's money goes but it is little enough spent for national defense when you consider the millions spent for prohibition prohi-bition enforcement. |
